He extended amnesty to all but the most prominent and wealthy Confederates and provided for the election (by white voters only) of delegates to the conventions to draw up new Southern state constitutions. Subsequently, Johnson granted thousands of pardons to Southerners exempted from the general amnesty.

Andrew Johnson suffered a paralytic attack which caused him to die.

Point Pleasant, Ohio, U.S.

Grant supported both amnesty for Confederate leaders and civil rights for the formerly enslaved. He worked for ratification of the Fifteenth Amendment and went to Capitol Hill to win passage of the Ku Klux Klan of 1871, although he was largely ineffective in enforcing the civil rights laws and other tenets of Reconstruction.

When Ulysses S.Grant left office, he and his wife went on a all around the world trip.

Delaware, Ohio, U.S.

brought post-Civil War Reconstruction to an end in the South and who tried to establish new standards of official integrity after eight years of corruption in Washington, D.C..

In retirement he devoted himself to humanitarian causes, notably prison reform and educational opportunities for Southern black youth.

Fayetteville, N.C.

Hiram Revels was an African American clergyman and university administrator, and was the first black American to sit in the U.S. Senate.

In 1870, Revels was elected to the United States Senate to replace Jefferson Davis, the former president of the Confederacy.

Revels left the Senate in 1871 after serving one full term. He was named president of Alcorn University near Lorman, Mississippi.

Georgetown, South Carolina

He was reelected four times, the longest tenure in the House of any Black politician during the Reconstruction era.

He was a formerly enslaved American who was the first Black person to serve in the U.S. House of Representatives (1870–79).

Beaufort South Carolina U.S.

From 1868 to 1870 he served in the South Carolina House of Representatives and from 1870 to 1874 in the state Senate.

Smalls’s mother was enslaved, and his father was an unknown white man.

Talbot county, Maryland, U.S.

He strongly supported the Fourteenth Amendment.

At the end of his life, Douglass, an American icon who fought for social justice and equity, became known as the “Lion of Anacostia.”

Danville, Vermont, U.S.

He was a radical Republican congressional leader during Reconstruction (1865–77) who battled for freedmen’s rights and insisted on stern requirements for

he moved to Pennsylvania to practice law in 1816. Having witnessed the oppressive slave system at close range, he early developed a fierce hatred of bondage and defended numbers of fugitives without fee.

New Lebanon, N.Y., U.S.

He played a prominent role in the reorganization of the Democratic Party in the decade from 1865 to 1875, serving as the party chairman of New York state. During this period he played a major role in the overthrow of the notorious Tweed Ring, a circle of corrupt politicians who had defrauded New York City of an estimated $30,000,000–$200,000,000, and in the removal of several corrupt judges.

Tilden attended Yale College and the University of the City of New York for brief periods and studied law. He began to practice law in New York City in 1841.

Isle of Wight, Georgia, U.S.

She helped form a Women's Relief Corps and compiled a list of war veterans living in Massachusetts.

Taylor ran a night school with help from her brother-in-law. The next year the school was forced to close because the Beach Institute started another free evening program.

Rifton, New York, United States

Truth moved to Michigan in 1867 and continued giving speeches about equal rights and women’s suffrage. She emphasized that civil rights should apply equally to black Americans regardless of gender.
