We talk about propaganda/related to extremism -what about the slave trade? What sort of common misconceptions justified the use and treatment of slaves? How did this mindset also allow Hitler to gain influence in Germany/See Eugenics. These things can be easily transferred over to English also, see
topics on Moodle.
BBC Two - Black and British: A Forgotten History

Just a thought - Difficult to decolonise a curriculum when the 'standard' ideology is deeply entrenched in all policy and practice eg Standard English is promoted as a means to achieve integration, in the name of social justice and equality but this good intention reproduces the ideology. And also when everything is viewed in terms of layers to achieve rather than webs or networks

Trish Hutton In English we can teach briefly, the history of the English Language e.g. loan words from other countries etc. This helps create a level playing field as learners realise that the English language belongs to all of the students in the classroom, regardless of their race. This could be a topic on Moodle. In my experience, learners feel very empowered and motivated by this.

I recently broached the subject of transgender people during transgender awareness week and highlighted their plight of persecution and non-acceptance. The students' faces said it all and only one person in each of my 2 classes was prepared to comment. There's clearly an issue of double standards here: we can't just expect that others accommodate our differences if we are not prepared to accept those who differ from us. Anke
