These streets are known for gang violence and where many hispanics living. In Salinas there are parts in town where it is more oppressed than others. The east-side happens to be one of them. There are streets that you can see the divide between oppression. The violence in this area increases since there is so much poverty. Some people even avoid heading to the east side. It has been known as the worst side of town but why. People have push all the hispanics. In this photo we see rubbish and stuff that makes the home a little worn down. This home looks like a 5x5 cube. In the east side people are pushed in they had to minimize the sizes of these homes were a family will have a bed in their living room. The way that in a city like Salinas latinos as a whole make up most of the population but even the latino community tends to oppress their own community. I asked the woman if she had access to educational things for her daughter. She said no she didn't have internet so they would walk to the school near by to use the WiFi. He looked very put together so I asked him what he did for a living. He stated that he was a field worker and did not have enough money to buy his kids food. In Salinas some places offer field work for thirteen dollars an hour. Some will offer for the bucker which causes a lack in pay. In our community it is not uncommon to see people collect cans. I even have to do it at times, however I save the cans from home. This is something that is a norm for many people in the community of Salinas. This shows how many people resort to having to live with multiple people in homes. These apartments are known for two bedrooms. When seeing how the lot is filled with cars it really makes you question how many people actually live in these homes. The number of people who can live in these homes can range up to five families. This is how our community sees field workers. They don't live in proper living situations and struggle to live on their own with their families. This is a photo of one of the places. I have to admit I was a little scared but what they don’t tell you about these parts of town is they need help. This is in the corner of "China Town" in which it is known for gangs, drugs and a location for the homeless . In out community of Salinas we have taken in all the homeless from Monterey and the outer parts of Salinas . These people living in these areas can range from addicts, gang members and even just people who don't have a place to live. When driving past you can see how they built their own community. Upon approaching we saw community service helping out. I asked "what are you doing to help here", he responded " we are just trying to get rid of them". The truck in front is the Salinas police department in which protools the area for gang and drugs yet don’t assist the homeless . This was a Mexican woman who worked in the fields. She lost her home due to covid and now lives in her car. The woman said she had to send her kids off to live with her family in Mexico because she didn’t have family here to care for them. She still works in the fields but cannot make enough to get a home let alone make enough to keep up for herself. She said that the city doesn't really care about you. In this area we can see homeless veterans, homeless students and more. This area as well as many others have secluded or have been known as areas to avoid. These areas need more of a functionality to be able to help its people. It is the fact that Salinas doesn’t really do anything to help the homeless . The community of Salinas pushes away these homeless into areas where it is dangerous. Many gangs are located in this area therefore drugs are here as-well which makes it easy for homeless to get addicted to drugs.
