until the XVII century the area was known with the name of Portugal. The name Piccadilly is a must for a tailor named Robert Baker, owner of a store in the Strand, that made his fortune by producing and selling of colli drives that were in fashion at the time and that they were called picadils. The tailor bought a vast area in the west of London and in 1612 he made to construct a building that was called Piccadilly Hall.
Sino al XVII secolo l'area era conosciuta con il nome di Portugal.

After the restoration of the monarchy english (1660) the areas of Piccadilly and Mayfair (located more to the north) became the sought after residential location, there were built some of the most sumptuous palaces in London of the era such as Clarendon House (where we now find Albemarle Street), Berkeley House (hereinafter Devonshire House) and the residence of Sir John Denham's (then Burlington House).
