Q1: Sketchbook Growth

This project shows my progress in the beginning of Art 1. You can really tell the difference from my first sketch (top left) compared to my last (bottom right). My first sketchbook drawing on the top left was really light, it didn't have much detail, and was kind of plain, than in my second sketch (top right) you could tell that I was thinking more outside the box as I had more detail than my first, it took up the entire background, and wasn't plain. In my third sketch (bottom left) you could tell I was going for a more realistic look as I was trying to draw my workout items and add the details that were on them and than in my fourth sketch you can see that I have more detail, it looks more realistic, and not as plain as my first sketch. Overall I think that I have completed a majority of my smart goal of including more detail, making it look more interesting, and less plain.

Techniques/Lines

What I learned and practiced about line weights, cross contour, and observational drawing is that when using lines, the thickness of the line can also affect the final result. Including a variety of thick and thin lines can give more information in your drawings. I learned that contour is the line which defines a form or edge, cross contour lines are drawn lines which travel, as the name suggests, across the form. In the drawings above I was able to practice line weights, contour, and cross contour. I was able to identify each line and understand the difference and how each really makes a difference to the drawings.

Artistic Inspiration

What I learned from watching and understanding Heather Hansen's work was how creative and cool her style and techniques were. How she was really able to express herself through the artwork which impresses me. Then, we scribbled in class using markers, crayons, colored pencils, or chalk. Then, we used sidewalk chalk outside. What I did was kind and match her techniques. I sat down and tried to draw how she was, it's kind of like she didn't even need to think about anything she just put her mind to it and kept going. What I learned about artistic thinking was sometimes don't think about it just do it and you can have any techniques you want to express with yourself.

Q1: Still Life Composition

We learned that a still life is a drawing of nonliving objects, arranged in a specific way, to create meaning or a visual effect. Techniques for the still life composition included lighting, shading, objects, composition, and leading lines. The item I brought was a soccer medal because soccer is something that is valuable to me and the still life project was about something valuable to you, that's why I chose it. My planning was focused mainly on figuring out how close I should be to the medal and where I should shade the darkest and including different types of shading.

Line Weight

I chose to create an image of a teapot, cup, sugar, creamer, and background that shows how I learned to use line weight. Line weights taught me that a variety of thick and thin lines can give more information in my drawing. As you can see when you look at my drawing you can see where the light hits, it has much thinner lines and where the light doesn't hit, it has much thicker lines. You can also see my shading and where the shadows form. This was my first major art project of Art 1. Critique and rubric results showed my strong areas as in working in a good time range, using good colors, good creativity, and understanding how to use the lines and my areas to grow as in learning how to use the lines more efficiently and cleaner lines. I revised my work by first taking a good look at it and seeing what I do better for next time and rating myself on that sheet of paper Mrs. Hart gave to us.

Still Life

My object was a soccer medal. The techniques I applied for the drawing was how closely I drew the medal, lighting, leading lines, light shading areas, and dark shading areas. I use these techniques because it helps me really imagine the drawing and how I want it to look in my head and bring the image in my head to life. I also use these techniques because they help me realize how I need to design my still Life. What I learned from this project was that once you really let yourself calm down a little and start to really figure out how to shade correctly it really helps you put the drawing together and realize how cool shading can be. Critique and Rubric feedback results showed my strong areas such as time management, creativity, and decent areas of shading and my areas to grow such as ghost lines and cleaner shading. I revised my work by first taking a good look at it and seeing what I do better for next time and rating myself on that sheet of paper Mrs. Hart gave to us.

Over the past couple weeks in my art class I have learned a number of things including different types of lines, shading, and believing in myself to be able to draw. The class is going pretty well I enjoy being in it, I like the people in it, and I like the work assigned to us. I like that it's not to hard but it's still challenging us to do better. My goals for Quarter Two would probably be to shade better, make my projects cleaner, and better line definition.
