Unfortunately, I couldn't join my class in their "sleepover" field trip but they were so excited to be allowed to stay in the museum until its closure time. During that day (started in the early hours in the morning until nearly midnight), some activities were organised, starting from a guided tour with free museum exploration, and arriving to the possibility to touch all the artefacts in the digital displays and try to answer all the quizzes.

Hi, one of my children (daughter) has already participated in a sleep-over in Lisbon. She simply loved it!! As Sílvia Raposeira told you, in Lisbon, in our Aquarium ("Oceanário") there is an activity called "Sleeping with the sharks". There are activities concerning oceans and ocean life preservation and then children have the chance to sleep near the aquarium. I don't know of any school that has done this activity, because it's an over-nigth experience and it would be rather complicated with parents and school authorizations. The "take-over" days also seem to me a very interesting and suitable activity. I don't know any Museum with that approach in Portugal. Here is the link for the Lisbon Oceanarium sleep-over

I am quite familiar with Teen Night events. On these evenings, a museum opens its doors to teenagers ( 13-18 yrs) for a variety of carefully orchestrated activities related to a theme. Months of planning are required to arrange the events, which often include visual art, music, food, and participatory activities. On June, 2016, Palazzo Grassi, Venice, hosted a Teen Night, an evening of free art and entertainment as Venice’s most prominent arts and cultural institutions swing open their doors. The central theme of this evening was inspired by the special exhibition “Accrochage” with a program designed to bring adolescents to contemporary art.

https://www.palazzograssi.it/it/eventi/tutti/teens-night/

Another inspiring example is represented by Teen Nights at Brooklyn Museum.

On February, 2018 they organized Teen Night: Basqui who?

I've never engaged in any take-over days or museum sleepover. It is not that easy in our country to create such activities since most of the museums are still sceptical about letting children engage in learning at museums, especially in this way. However, thankfully upon a lot of suggestions and proof, some museums are opening their doors for us educators to engage in museum learning and learning more mean making! I would surely use the links and ideas posted here as tangible proof of the amount of constructive learning that goes on when engaging children with learning in a museum.

I have never participated in a museum sleepover, but I’ve had the chance to visit a few museum in Britain where I noticed the accuracy they usually have in adding value to traditional visits by hiring people for performances dressed in stage costumes, or they may include fake talking statues like the one of Sir Winston Churchill delivering speeches. These small museums add a bonus because I’m sure both children and adults appreciate that and come for further visits.

As for Italy, where I’m from, I can recommend the Museo del Balì, where they organize “scientific daytime picnics” as field trips are usually planned in Spring. It is a way to involve people to come and inspire them with its multitude of hands-on scientific activities.

It's an old Palace in south Italy called "The Royal Estate of Carditello". Our older students are obliged by Italian law to engage in work learning experience, and so they made a tourist package to visit Carditello, planning activities, transport and voluntary student guides to take tourists around the estate and so promote this outstanding hisorical building. I’ve lived for some years of my childhood really very close to the important archeological site and museum of Paestum and I was used to live that places as places of exploration and game, so I fully understand how important the experiences we are talking about are. However, in the environment, where I live and work now, such experiences are difficult to organize. However, I would like to organize projects in which my students collaborate with the small local museums in the promotion of their cultural heritage or /and share and compare this heritage with students living in places where there are similar museums.

For me, the activities seen in videos and in-depth documents are new and beautiful and currently not reproducible. In addition to the structural problems of the in-house network, which can be overcome with a network of people (schools, communities, families), the collaboration of the network of people is lacking the fundamental thing. There are many reasons and there would be some roads to try to start thinking together. This would have costs, not just money, at the beginning but - from my point of view - brings many gains: skills, knowledge and appreciation of what you learn, sharing, promotion of territory and schools. I am convinced that a network needs a minimum core, alone it can not. I am also convinced that a minimum core needs a minimum interlocutor to build a first connection. At the moment my research is on this level: the first effective and operational connection. In the meantime I enrich myself, for example thanks to the ideas and possibilities that I learned from the materials of the modules, they can be implemented through collaboration.

Museum Night (Croatian: Noć muzeja) is an annual event in Croatia. During one night in the year (usually on the last Friday in January), the entrance fee to most of the museums in Croatia is waived. Museum Night was first held in December 2005, with only six museums from Zagreb area participating, drawing 10,000 visitors. The event evolved to include museums in the rest of Croatia in the following years, with over 200 museums participating. In 2014, there were 360,000 museum-goers during the Museum Night, with 800 performances held.

Then they assisted the coordinators to display their work in the same Museum. I am aware that the above mentioned activity was not fully taken over by the students, they just participate in it. I think that the Nature Museum would be quite inspiring as students love animals and I am sure that the student's will enjoy themselves.

I'm familiar with sleep-overs or even take-overs from kindergarten and school projects (reading nights etc.), but in my region I haven't seen a similar activity in a museum yet. As an adult I participated in a 3-days-workshop in an open-air museum, which was situated in a remote valley. All participants slept in tents, working on historic crafts projects during the day. To be honest - I don't think that's an activity for all children, because it was actually really creepy during the night. The goats scared the hell out of everybody ... :-)

In fact, I’m not aware of any initiatives like this being common, or occurring in Portugal! “Museum Sleepovers” however are becoming more frequent, whether in public or School libraries, especially for a younger audience, or in more emblematic spaces, like the “Oceanário” in Lisbon (“Sleeping with the sharks” event). In spite being a very interesting activity, this event is still inaccessible to most Portuguese families due to the costs it would imply.

Pre-school and 1st grade students have been participating on “Pyjama Day”, in a different context from what they are used to: on a scheduled date, the children go to school wearing their pyjamas and have a sleepover at the Municipal Library.

In conclusion, I think it is a different and appealing way to captivate and incentive children to develop a passion for reading and for knowledge in general!

We have never designed a museum sleepover, children would definitely like it. In addition to the planned activity this year which includes at least three months, an interesting experience was the visit to the Balì museum
http://www.cultura.pesarourbino.it/elenco/musei/saltara-fondazione-villa-del-bal.html

Besides, we had take-over days at school (studetns acted as school stuff) and also had real-life journalistic investigation in the street of anothe city. Both were very exciting events.

In these days visiting the Basilica di San Clemente I met a dutch group of Gymnaseum students. Two students where guiding the group in a very orginal way so I stopped looking and listening. It was great, I even needed to seek for the teacher among the students. I asked what they where doing. So the told me that during their trip in Rome each time two students should prepare a 40min talk concentrating on symbolism and iconografism for the group. Everyone was highly involved and it was great to see that it works.
