This article critiques the popular social media ‘performative act’ to upload blackout pictures and anti-racism hashtags for the sole purpose of appearing to advocate for policy change. There are other, more meaningful ways to initiate change such as signing petitions, supporting local black services, educating oneself on the history of racism, and speaking out against injustice. Posting a black photo is just another form of silence.
Article:

The Outsiders was published in 1983 and covers the story of a teen gang, The Greasers, who are at odds with a rival gang called the Socials. While these two groups do not come from culturally diverse backgrounds, they do experience opposing social histories. The Greasers come from a lower-middle class neighbourhood while the Socials are a privileged group who express their contempt for the poverty-stricken Greasers. The Socials are representative of the harmful impact personal bias can have on one’s mindset and actions.
