In this course EDIT 1301, at the beginning of the semester, we were told that we will be learning bunch of educational tools and applications to assist us in our teaching in the future. There are some apps that I have used before the class and some were not. I was and am sure that this class will be fun and interesting.

Our main app for this course is Padlet. All the notes, presentation, and so on are posted on Padlet. I have never thought Padlet would be very useful at first but I was wrong. It is a great app.

Overall, I looked forward learning in this class.

Padlet is a post-it board or wall where teacher and student can use to share any learning material and paste it like a sticky-note on the Padlet wall. It is like a virtual board. Teacher and students can choose the format of their wall. Furthermore, student and teacher can post materials and leave comments on the Padlet wall. Teacher and student can also post pictures and videos, record voice narration and so on, on the Padlet wall. Padlet can also be used as learning management system (LMS) where teacher can share or distribute learning materials such as notes, links, quizzes and so on.

One of the things Padlet can be used by teacher to teach English is teaching reading skills. Teacher can use Padlet to ask student to read and study notes posted and list out the new vocabularies that student learn from the notes and search for the meaning of the vocabularies and later post and share it on the Padlet wall.

Padlet is useful for classroom collaboration. From my experience, Padlet is very helpful for passive and quiet students to share their thought or ask question freely without being scared or shy. Next, one weakness that I discovered in Padlet is that teachers have no control of what students may type or post on the wall. From my experience, students used it to chat with each other, in an informal way, where they left comments everywhere and laughing, with the lecturer on the same Padlet wall. It can be understood that it was their first time using Padlet, so they were excited to use it. In term of the ease of use, I would give it a 5 because Padlet is very easy to use. In term of its usefulness, I would give it a 4 because Padlet is a shared wall, so everyone in the classroom can view each other’s works and even take a sneak peek and copy others’ works. Overall, I really like Padlet. It is very easy to use but I don’t think I will use it in my teaching in the future.

Mindmeister is an online mind mapping software that allows users to visualize, share and present their thoughts via the cloud.

Teacher and student can use Mindmeister to make notes and summary of a topic in a mind map form more appealing and interesting by adding media and customize it nicely.

From my experience using Mindmeister, it is very easy to use to make and customize my mind map to look more interesting and appealing as users add can picture and video into their mind map. They can also customize colour according to their like. And it is also saved automatically on the cloud, so I users can always view their mind map.

One weakness in Mindmeister is that it is difficult to use on phones because of the size of the text, but it is easy to use on computers.

In term of ease of use, I would give it a 5 as it is very easy to use. In term of its usefulness, I would give it a 4.5 as some features to exporting it into certain format cannot be done freely. Which means we have to pay in order to convert the mind map.

Overall, I like Mindmeister because it is very easy to use and I will probably use it in my teaching in the future and would recommend it to my student.

Language teacher can use Vocaroo for teaching pronunciation drills.

Some advantages of Vocaroo is that, first, it does not require registration to use it. Teacher and student can immediately use it without having to register an account. Second, users can share, embed their audio recording on a lot of apps and LMS, and users can even turn their audio into a QR code format.

One weakness of Vocaroo is that it the users’ audio or voice recoding will expire in a few months, which means if user do not download their audio, they cannot access it after a few months. In term of the ease of use, I would give it a 5 as it is very super easy to use. In term of its usefulness, I would give it a 5 too as it is super useful for teaching and learning purpose.

Overall, I like Vocaroo because it is very simple yet very easy and useful and I will probably use it in my teaching process in the future.

Canva is a popular graphic design platform that allows users to create quality and eye-catching poster, infographic, social media graphics, and other visual content. Canva is available on both web and mobile, and it also integrates millions of images, fonts, templates, and illustrations for its users.

On teaching and learning process, using infographic template in Canva, teacher can use it to make teaching notes more interesting and appealing as it integrates media in the format. Teacher can make a simple notes or summary of an English topic and put in some media element like picture, icon, and so on using infographic template in Canva.

One advantage in Canva is that there are a lot of interesting and eye-catching templates that make users’ task easier. Users just need to choose a template and edit it with their own.

One weakness of Canva is that in the making of a product, Canva eventually become heavy and consistently become lagging. This can make users feel very frustrated. In my experience using Canva, my laptop even hang that I need to restart my laptop to continue editing my product in Canva.

In term of ease of use, I would give it a 4 since it lags easily that makes people feels frustrated.

In term of its usefulness, I would give a 4.5 since it is very useful for teacher and student to use it in their teaching and learning process as it is very appealing and it have a very good quality features, templates and so on.

Overall, I have a 50-50 feelings on Canva. Microsoft Excel is very useful in data and so on.

Teacher can use Microsoft Excel to make record of students’ mark and grade. Other than that, teacher can also teach student how to make calculation using formula in Excel. Besides, teacher can also use Microsoft Excel to make crossword puzzle activity for students.

One advantage of Microsoft Excel is that it is very easy and helpful for teacher to organize data and do calculation of students mark and grade

One weakness of Microsoft Excel is that it is very difficult and complicated to use. It is impossible to use it for the first time without knowing anything about the features and formulas first. From my experience, I need to write down formulas so that I can refer to it another time or else I will be completely lost.

In term of ease of use, I would give a 3, because as mentioned before, it is super difficult and complicated to use it. From my experience, if I learn a new feature or formula, I need to use it consistently, or else I will forget everything. But it is so hard that I rarely used it.

In term of its usefulness, I would give it a 4.5 as it is very useful for teachers, but it is hard to master it.

Overall, I dislike Excel because it is super difficult and complicated to use it.

Nearpod is a student engagement platform that can be used to amazing effect in the classroom. The concept is very simple where teacher can create presentations contain of quiz's, polls, videos, images, drawing-boards and so on.

Teacher can create an idiom lesson and include a brainstorm activity to ask student to list out idioms that they have learned before. This can bring out students’ interaction in the class.

One advantage of Nearpod is that it is a very fun and interactive as teacher can make notes and tasks within a presentation. it can attract students’ focus and interest as from my experience using Nearpod, I think students will always waiting for the next task within a lesson. In my opinion the tasks within a presentation is the thing that make it interesting. Besides, it requires students’ engagement in class.

One weakness of Nearpod is that it requires good and strong internet connection to use it. Creating an IT product itself requires a lot of time. If the app requires a strong internet connection, then it might be burdensome for users. It is time consuming.

In term of the ease of use, I would give it a 3.5 since it always slows and requires strong internet connection.

In term of its usefulness, I will give it 5 since Nearpod is very engaging, interesting, and interactive to use.

Overall, although Nearpod is a good platform for students’ engagement in classes, I dislike Nearpod since it requires a strong internet connection and always slow down, but I think I will be using it in my teaching in the future but rarely.

Edpuzzle is an educational tool that integrate interactive features for teachers to crop, edit, embed question, link, notes, and receive immediate feedback within a video.

With Edpuzzle, teacher teach listening comprehension skill by putting a video of a celebration in Malaysia and ask students to type in or record their voice on what do they understand from the video. Between that, teachers can also put multiple choice questions to keep students’ focus on the video.

One advantage of Edpuzzle that it encourages students’ engagement in the class. Students will have to keep their attention and focus on the video. It also helps students to make full use of their short-term memory span effectively instead of watching the whole video and later answer the question after the video.

One weakness of Edpuzzle is that it requires students to work individually. From my experience, students are encouraged to use earphone while watching the video, as it may interrupt other people and make loud noise. Students must use earphone to listen to the video and to be focused on what being said in the video. Edpuzzle does not encourage collaboration between student as Edpuzzle concept is like an assessment for student.

In term of ease of use, I would give it a 5 since it is very easy to use for both teacher and student.

In term of its usefulness, I would give 4 since it encourages students’ short-term memory use, but it does not encourage collaboration between students.

Overall, I like Edpuzzle and will use it in my teaching in the future since it is very easy to use.

Wizer.me is an education app that allows teachers to create quick, easy and fun digital worksheet. Teacher can create a combination of many tasks in one worksheet.

Teacher can create a grammar worksheet using multiple tasks such as MCQ task, open-ended task and fill-in-the-blank task for questions and also drawing task for students to draw and describe how they understand a concept of tenses. For example, ask the student on how they can visualize the concept of simple present tense vs present continuous tense. As teacher can use wizer.me to make a combination of tasks within one worksheet, they can choose any suitable task to put in their worksheet.

One advantage of Wizer.me is that it is very engaging. From my experience using it, it is definitely more engaging and interesting than paper worksheet. For example, teacher can assign speaking skill assessment. Using wizer.me speaker feature, student can record their own voice for their speaking skill assessment which a paper worksheet cannot do. Thus, student can take time and work on their own pace.

One weakness of wizer.me is that not all features are free. The free features are already great, but there are a few features that are not free thus users must pay in order to be able to use the paid features. One more, wizer.me does not save users worksheet automatically. It would have been better if this feature is added.

In term of ease of use, I would give it a 5 since it is super easy to use.

In term of its usefulness, I would give it a 5 too since it is very useful for teachers to make worksheet more engaging and appealing.

Overall, I really like wizer.me and will definitely use it in my teaching. It requires students’ attention and focus. Its meme feature is one of the things that keeps students to engage in the quiz.

One weakness of Quizizz is that if the quiz is played live, students are determined and more likely to compete with each other on who is getting the most correct answer rather that understanding the quiz effectively. Teacher can use Biteable to create videos and they can easily be added to classroom to share with the students and make lessons more interesting and engaging.

Teacher can quickly create a video using the explainer template to explain any topic of a lesson. This way it can encourage students’ engagement to the lesson especially visual learners as this type of students is more attracted to visual learning.

One advantage of Biteable is that it is very easy to use, with a wide variety of built-in and ready-made templates. Teacher can use Biteable to create a video quickly with a high-quality, professional looking video in minutes. It also does not lag like other online video maker apps.

One weakness of Biteable is that users cannot download their own video. It is a part of their premium plan which means users have to pay in order to download their video. For free version, users can only share their video through link.

In term of ease of use, I would give it a 5 since it is very easy to use with the built-in templates and it save time.

In term of its usefulness, I would give it a 4.5 since it is useful for teacher to make lesson more engaging.

Overall, I really like Biteable and will use it in my teaching in the future.

At the beginning, I was curious and thought that some apps are not that useful for teaching, but after learning and knowing each app in detailed and in-depth, I was wrong. Each app has its own criteria and usefulness to help teachers and students in their teaching and learning process.

Besides, I was so worried as I only have a friend from the same batch in this class. The other classmates are not the same batch as me and my friend. So, I was worried that I would be having problems in catching up with the lesson. But thanks a lots to Dr Tunku’s help, I am able to learn effectively in a very fun environment. I am grateful to learn from her.

To conclude, the exposure of all apps has indirectly given me a vision of what app and how will I use it in the future. It gives me an opportunity to look ahead and plan my teaching method bit by bit.
