In the ocean, hydrothermal vents can form on the floor. The vents form when the cold water goes into cracks in the ocean floor and gets heated up by magma in the crust, which causes the water to rise up and exit the crust. Normally, the water would have evaporated, but the pressure of the ocean prevents it from turning into a gas. When the hot water leaves the crust, it brings other materials such as sulfur, copper, and iron. These materials in the hot water then mix with the near-freezing ocean water, which causes the materials to condense and form the chimneys that the vents spew materials out of.
