Choose at least one of the following social issues that were present in this reading chunk. Discuss how this social force was present in a characters life. (Your response should be at least 5-6 sentences).

Social class was one of the issues that was present during this chunk of the book we read. They were present because they were in the bottom class and were super poor with barely enough stuff to survive. They did not have a place to live and stay forever. They kept moving over and over again and could not settle because they had to run away if they could not pay the rent or if they had an incident. They always struggled with having enough money for basic needs like food and they always had to eat the same food for weeks or not eat at all.

Social Class

Race/Ethnicity

Religion

Education

Culture

Health

Political Landscape

Find a quote in this chunk that stood out to you. Please also include a picture or GIF to further describe this quote. "I had to say yes" Mom said. "Your father wouldn't take no for an answer." Besides, she explained, she had to get away from her mother, who would't let her make even the smallest decision on her own "I had no idea your father would be worse" This quote stood out to me because she didn't really have a choice on if she wanted to marry Rex or not but she did it anyways hoping she would get more freedom on what she can say but it was actually worse than what she had hoped.

Give context for your quote. What was happening in the story that made this quote significant? Who was speaking?

Why did this quote stand out to you?

Choose 3 Formalist Lens Questions to respond to. Your responses should thoroughly respond to the prompt in at least three sentences. Fire is a word that gets used a lot in this book. Jeannette got burnt when she was a little kid and I think that the author shared this with the audience because he wants the reader to know how Jeannette had a hard childhood. The author uses Pathos to make the reader feel pity for Jeannette.

My family is different from Jeannette's because we did not move a whole lot like Jeannette's family. In this chapter I learned that Jeannette was raped and in my experience nothing similar ever happened to me.

The economic conditions determine where they go. It is always somewhere where everyone is poor yet they are still the most poor and they live in bad housing conditions. They are poor because Rex is lazy and doesn't want to work and even if he does work he doesn't manage his money very well. Whenever they do have money they spend it in fancy restaurants or Rex spends it on his drinking.

"When I
asked him where he'd been, his explanations were either so vague or so
improbable that I stopped asking." This quote stood out to me because Rex kept disappearing for days because he was drinking and Jeannette was starting to notice it. Jeannette had not noticed that her dad was an alcoholic and Rex disappearing for so long and not having a good excuse made her realize he isn't who she thought he was.

The characters behaviors and emotions show that they are not psychologically stable. Especially Rex seems to have some psychological trauma from his childhood. That could explain why he has drinking problems and is violent towards his wife. I think Rex was physically abused as a child and his way to cope growing up was to drink alcohol.
