Blind Devotion - Song analysis

The Intensions of the work

I wanted to make a reggae inspired song, with some alternative electronic synths and beats. The main aspect of this project was to use syncopation which is the off beat melodic chord structures that fall heavy on beat 2 and 4. with the inspiration of "Jungle" by Tash Sultana.

Your knowledge of music theory

My knowledge when i think about the genre of reggae is that syncopation (Off beat) rhythm play an important role, with this iconic method you can normally identify when reggae is being played. Also the use of simplistic chord sequences will repeat throughout the song, this will allow a firm structure. the intro consists of very simplistic chord instrumentation with the guitar and piano, with a slight vocal introduction.

leading on to verse 1 where the bpm is 140, i chose to sing in a contralto. moderate low voice with slight bends and small vocal pitch changes that are sung with the acompinament of single chord patterns that are looped throughout this song, you can also hear a high and light piano melody line which lowers chords that is played through this section. Although the tempo is quite fast i still thought that as a whole it was slow this could of been down to the fact that added steady vocals. I wanted more layered instruments so i used the bass guitar as a added rhythmic pattern which is also joined with a lower synth just before the chorus. As i've said before layered instrumentation is a must for this song so i introduces different sections bar by bar, which slowly increase in dynamics by putting midi click tracks also forms a steady build up.

Every instrument is layered for texture, with the use of syncopation on the main guitar followed by a higher and lower synths to play a syncopated rhythmic melody line counterpoint to ive that reggae inspired feel. all structured together with a (8th) swing drum pattern. most instrumentation is striped back to allow the vocals to come through, just leaving the drum pattern, the syncopated guitar chords and piano. another aspect of the song that i thought was important was harmonies, "I stay true" - a higher harmony is added for texture and dynamics while the drum pattern is stopped/ paused at the end of the bar for dramatic effect. Throughout the instrumental consists of two main rhythmic vocal pattern that is later joined with a higher harmonies at bar 4 all while we still hear the syncopated main guitar pattern, a drum beat after each bar, guitar chords, piano chords and the light and high piano melody line. right at the end all rhythmic patterns are stopped leaving the two harmonies singing in unison with the, light guitar and piano chords. finishing off with that light piano melody line.

Evaluation

Most of the songs that i compose are normally in the typical verse, chorus, verse, chorus song structure, but because of this style of genre i got to try out different arrangement most of the time in reggae music it ha a relaxed feel which gives me the freedom to experiment with instrumentals, i personally think that my instrumentation works well in my song although there is room for improvement and i would love to add a real guitar solo.

use of technology

- logic pro - for getting the track down

- midi keyboard - adding extra layered instruments

- studio interface - to record live vocals and guitar

- octave guitar pedal - to convert what i play on guitar an octave lower

- rode nt1-a mic - for best vocal pickup

- electric guitar - for the main structure of the song

- loop pedal - adding layers and dynamics

What to write about...
- Song structure
- Arrangement
- Key & Harmony
- Melody
- Tempo & Rhythm
- Vocal Techniques
- Repetition
- Dynamics
- Harmonies
- Instrumentation

Intro, Verse, Chorus, Verse, Chorus

Tash Sultana's Notion begins with an instrumental with the use of simple chord structures and layered melody lines, this song is very simple for its genre you could also describe it as an andante feel. However, because this song has 3 sections it makes it easy for a listener to engage with. Throughout the start of the song, you can hear the main melody lines that use unison to compliment her chord structures. this ostinato style has guitar riffs loop gradually which are accompanied by layered instrumentation of alternative melodies and harmonies being played on the guitar you will hear this style of arrangement interweaving between the rest of the song.

At a tempo of 122bpm which is roughly the standard for musicians to work with on logic pro because of this, she is able to sustain guitar slides and hammer-ons for diversity and complexity in a legato structure, I personally feel this is a great way to make your music sound more interesting rather than just having simple chords.

The fact that this song is in E Minor, she is able to have a wide verity of chords consisting of the pitches of E, F sharp, G, A, B, C and D. Throughout the intro you can hear the main guitar pattern that has a finger picking concept of overlapping sequence that is looped to get the base down for the song I think that this is an affective way to gain a musical structure for the song, because of this she can layer her main melody that forms that descends down with the use of a hammer on.

She follows this main melody with a higher harmony with the effect of slowly introducing single strumming chords of C, Em, and D to add more depth and texture. After the guitar part she moves on to a simplistic drum pattern which is played on a MIDI drum synth which is repeated for the chorus which is described as "boom, clap, boom, clap, boom, clap, boom, boom, boom, clap, clap, clap." this alternating drum pattern has a standard time signature of 4/4 that adds a sturdy structure.

With repetition and dynamics playing a huge part throughout this song, she is able to use her voice to take center stage. At the verses she starts singing in a free motion also known as ad libitum, the vocals very light and the phrasing sometimes mixes with the instrumentation. Her pitch has a smooth blend transition between head and chest voice due to this she has a wide vocal range which means she and can easily go back and forth form, especially with the use of a harmony pedal which feels ridged and digitalized but still tends to bring out a powerful and rich performance. The harmony pedal used is set with the full four harmony setting as another way to add depth to the chorus.

The main instrumental located near the end of the song is a strong guitar solo, with the use of a Boss distortion pedal she is able to maintain a strong and complex melody that includes bends, slides, and hammer-ons which give an uplifting and spiritual feel, I personally believe that having a styled solo or instrumental located somewhere in a song works well when done properly, and over time you get to hear the main guitar riffs that are looped once more which build-up a diverse selection of dynamics.

Generally country depends on a limited number of chords. It is not musically complicated and this certainly contributes to its popularity and playability.

2 Country music should have a strong story line. “The Band Played Waltzing Matilda” or “Pub With No Beer”, illustrate the point.

3 The song should have a simple and memorable chorus, which supports the storyline and is one reason so many people find it easy to recall and sing a good country song.

4 Identifiable instrumentation. Organs, orchestras, strings, wind instruments are NOT country. Guitars, banjos, fiddles, pedal steel guitars, harmonicas definitely are. There are exceptions of course but instruments must be played in a country manner.

Some say that geographic locations are a factor, insisting that a non urban setting is an essential ingredient.

ndie rock's more melodic, less noisy, and relatively angst-free counterpart, Indie Pop reflects the underground's softer, sweeter side, with a greater emphasis on harmonies, arrangements, and songcraft. Encompassing everything from the lush orchestration of chamber pop to the primitive simplicity of twee pop, its focus is nevertheless more on the songs than on the sound, and although both indie pop and indie rock embrace the D.I.Y. spirit of punk, the former rejects punk's nihilistic attitude and abrasive sonic approach.
https://www.allmusic.com/style/indie-pop-ma0000004494

Indie Pop is Exactly What It Says on the Tin: Pop-centric music made independently. It is characterized by its production; whereas standard pop acts often employ a team of writers (often with the artist in question having little-to-no involvement with the songwriting), indie pop acts write all of their songs by themselves (occasionally guest writers may be involved to help with the creative process, but it largely comes from the heart of the singer). Standard pop acts are often signed to a major label, and take heavy direction from those labels in both their image and sound. Indie Pop acts are often signed to independent label and have full creative control over their music and image. Although some indie pop acts are signed on to major labels, they're used solely for the distribution of their music.
http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/IndiePop

Prior to the rise of rock & roll, country music was rarely heard outside of its intended market, effectively isolating it from any concerns about wide accessibility. When rockabilly took off, however, country musicians were forced to consider whether their true affinities lay with traditional country or with this popular new style, which allowed artists to reach crossover audiences for the first time. This flirtation with the mainstream marked the beginnings of country-pop.

https://www.allmusic.com/subgenre/country-pop-ma0000004416
