Tip #1 - Find Mentors

I want to become a youth sports coordinator and share my love of sports with them. It is important I begin searching for a mentor before I enter the job completely, so I can have the confidence going into the job. This would be beneficial to me because they can teach me their organizational skills when taking on a job like this. It would benefit me a lot to "find out what attitudes or choices they have made personally and professionally to help themselves get and stay motivated" (D'Souza, 2011). I have no experience in this job and I believe finding a mentor who has been doing the job for a while will help the transition be more smooth for me.

Tip #2- Bring out the Best in Yourself

In everything I do, I think it is important to always bring your best self forward. With this, it is important to "be able to recognize what your special gifts and talents are" (D'Souza, 2011). As I begun to think of my best self, I believe my best qualities are my work ethic and being so outgoing. I believe these qualities will help me be successful in my future career as a youth sports coordinator. As someone who has a strong work ethic, I believe this will be beneficial when becoming a youth sports coordinator because there requires a lot of planning and organization and with my work ethic, I know I can be successful. Combining with my work ethic, I am also very outgoing. I believe this will ensure my success in this career because being someone who is around kids a lot, it is important to be outgoing and match their energetic vibes. Now that I have identified my best attributes to be successful in this new career, it is important to "take time to be proud of who [I] am, what [I] can do, and what [I] bring to the people in my life" (D'Souza, 2011). Going into a career as a youth sports coordinator, I want to make a positive impact on the children's lives and I believe my qualities will ensure that to happen.

Tip #3- Build Your Self-Esteem

Since beginning college, I have worked hard on building my self-esteem and continuing to work on this today. I think this is important in my future career as a youth sports coordinator. Going into this profession, it is important to continuously build my self-esteem because a lot of people will be looking at me for answers, so I need to be able to answer to everything with confidence. I think it is important I keep my positive energy with me, especially when being surrounded my kids. Building my self-esteem is important in my career and allowing myself to be playful, this is important because "the more fun you have in your life, the more motivated you will feel about continuing to create the life you want" (D'Souza, 2011). With being a youth sports coordinator, a lot of stress will likely come. In times of stress, I always try my best to continue to be positive and I believe my positivity and care-free attitude will allow me to be successful. While I may be super positive, I can recognize that there will be challenges along the way. I will need to use these challenges as "opportunities to grow even stronger in [my] determination to succeed and move forward" (D'Souza, 2011). I have worked in a high-stress fast-paced job for the last seven years, and I believe the problem solving skills I have obtained in my experience will help me do the same in a career as a youth sports coordinator.

As I approach the end of my college education, it is important to me to begin to map my life out and come to terms with what I want, both long and short term. When I begin my new career as a youth sports coordinator, this is important to me and I think it will help me keep a level head at all times. In the beginning of my career, I will start with small goals and move towards bigger goals. I think small goals will be beneficial to me because it will allow me to see how successful I can be which will help build my self-esteem. Once I am able to build my self-esteem and see what I am capable of, I will be able to set larger goals for myself. This is important because "when you know your purpose and passion, they-along with your personal values- will be the foundation if your plan" (D'Souza, 2011). I know that this will be important in my future career because this is a new journey I am on, so by mapping it out life and how I want to align my passions and values with it, will make my successes a lot easier. I will be able to "continue to move [my] life the the direction [I] want by creating [my] own opportunities" (D'Souza, 2011). As I progress in this new career choice, new opportunities may show up and I will be able to make even more successful move in my life.

Tip #5- Create Your Own Opportunities

As a youth sports coordinator, I believe there will be an endless amount of opportunities for success. As the coordinator, I can run the youth programs how I want, and if I don't like how things are going, then I can make the changes needed. Adding to this, if I follow the plan I have set for myself and it is successful, this can create other opportunities for myself. In order the create these opportunities for myself, I need to "set realistic goals and plan out actions of how [I] can achieve these goals" (D'Souza, 2011). Setting goals for myself with a timeline will allow me to create opportunities for myself and while I am creating opportunities for myself, I will also be creating opportunities for the children enrolled in my program. By planning out how I will achieve the goals I set for myself, I am taking things into my own hands and not waiting for opportunity to happen, I am creating them myself. While setting goals is an important step in creating these opportunities for myself, it is also important to understand the importance of leaning on others to help me reach success. It is important to "meet and get to know the people who can help you achieve your goals" (D'Souza, 2011). Since I am going into a new career I am not completely familiar with, I believe finding people who have more experience would be extremely beneficial. I can take their success and how they achieved them, combine them with my own to help me figure out what works well for me.

Tip #6- Invest in Planning

Planning is something I have done my entire life. I have never been the type of person to do anything on a whim, I always feel like I need a plan. Since the beginning of my college education, I keep a planner which is how I plan out how I will get my homework done. As I begin in a new career, I think planning is even more important because I am beginning something completely new for me and investing in planning will help the transition be a lot easier. By investing in planning, it will "help [me] take the steps and make the decisions that are a necessary part of keeping [me] on track" (D'Souza, 2011). Starting a new adventure in life can be scary, I believe investing in planning during this step in my life is crucial to my success. Planning will benefit me in many ways in my future career. It will help me "re-evaluate and stay up-to-date on the right choices" (D'Souza, 2011). Being a youth sports coordinator can be chaotic enough as it is with all the different sports being organized, I believe planning will help me ensure each sports program be successful. I believe the same amount of work should be put into each youth sports program. Investing in planning will help me ensure this, I will be able to keep track of my goals in each sports program because it is likely each one may be run a little differently. I think a huge essential in this job will be to keep a planner to keep track of my plans, goals, and visions for each sports program.

Tip #7- Make a Change

From a young age, I knew I wanted to make a change in children's lives. I always thought I wanted to be a teacher, but the more I learn about other opportunities to make a change in a child's live, I am finding other career opportunities. Being a youth sports coordinator is something important to me because I believe sports can make a huge change in a child's life. As a child who was engaged in many sports from a young age, I believe it is a great opportunity for children to learn skills like teamwork, communication, and a sense of belonging. I know that being involved in so many sports when I was a child has helped me be the person who I am today and I think every child should be involved in some sport. Wanting to make a change means that you have a "dissatisfaction with the status quo, vision for the future, and practical steps to enact change" (D'Souza, 2011). As a youth sports coordinator, I want to get children engaged with each other and learn social skills. I believe this is especially important today with many children isolating themselves watching TV and playing video games. In my new profession, I want to attract children from all different socioeconomic statuses. It is important to me to ensure all families that if money is an issue, then we can work out a solution that works for them because I don't think the lack of money should rob the children of the great opportunity of being involved in sports.

Tip #8- Motivate Yourself Using Loss Aversion

As someone going into a profession of a youth sports coordinator, I understand that the possibility of loss in many ways is very possible, but I also understand that I need to keep myself motivated in these situations. Going into a profession with young children, the thought of money means almost little to me because the only thing I really want to do is make a change in children's lives. I will use this as my motivation to keep going and working myself up on the chain to ensure I am at a spot in my life where I can financially support myself and be comfortable in life. I believe having this huge motivation for myself will ensure my success in both my career and my finances. I know once people can see my love for helping children, I will be where I need to be financially. With a transition to a new job, "we rarely take the risk and make the change to a new job or career because we are afraid of losing our present job and the stability of what we know" (D'Souza, 2011). I have made transitions within my current job and the thought of failure scared me but once I jumped into the new role, I can now see that change is a good thing, there is a transitional period but in the end the motivation for better things is what has kept me going. The transition and the thought of loss aversion can be scary but "we can exploit this natural instinct and use it to motivate ourselves" (D'Souza, 2011). I believe that it is important to always keep yourself motivated, even in situations where the changes may be scary. I will continue to keep this motivation as I go into my new career as a youth sports coordinator and embrace these changes to make things better for myself and the children that I encounter on my journey.

Tip #9- Turn Work into Play

I have always been someone who believed it is important to have fun in everything you do, including work. I am really excited to become a youth sports coordinator because I think it will be something I will enjoy a lot and have fun while I am doing it. With this being said, I know that it will be a hard job at times with all of the organization needed to be put into the job. When I think of turning work into play, I always think of the restaurant Texas Roadhouse. Their employees all wear shirts that say "I HEART MY JOB". At first I thought it was cheesy, but honestly every time I go there for a meal, I notice their employees always seem happy and all seem to get along pretty well. They even do a line dance together and everyone is smiling the entire time. I want to create that same type of work environment when I go into my future career as a youth sports coordinator. I think it is important to create this type of environment because "pleasure and laughter generate endorphins- the neurotransmitters that produce feelings of well-being" (D'Souza, 2011). I can just imagine myself running around the gym with the children enrolled in my programs laughing and having the best time. Images like this make me really excited for my future and the impact that I will have on the children's lives.
