This is a freewrite activity I had already used. After the talk with Diane, I wanted to put this on paper and pair it with a graphic organizer to make it more accessible outside of class time as well as something students could bring with them to their resource teachers.

Research Paper

I have noticed that students can access the research data bases and find articles relating to their writing topic, but they have difficulty understanding the articles that they find, possibly because the reading levels are too high for them. I would include in a research paper writing assignment a mini lesson on how to read/understand an article. Have the students print out their articles and arm them with a highlighter and guide them through annotation- make notes, ask questions, highlight unknown vocabulary, etc. For some students with a much lower reading level, perhaps show them how to use AI to summarize the article or rewrite it in a more appropriate reading level. I also think another important skill to have when finding research is being able to quickly skim/summarize an article to determine whether or not it is usable for them.

I use this as a quick introductory writing activity at the beginning of the school year. It gives students a chance to talk about themselves, allows me to learn about them a little, and it also provides me a glimpse of where they are at in their writing as 6th graders.

This is an activity I did with the short story "Mother Tongue" by Amy Tan. After students have read the story, I have them come up with ways that their lives have been influenced by family and friends. This helps them understand how strongly language influences their lives inside and outside of school.

This is a lesson we did on the Code of Hammurabi. At the end of the lesson students write an argumentative paragraph on whether the code was just or not. I added in structures for textual analysis, thesis writing, and organizers for evidence and reasoning sentences.

Renaissance & Reformation Research Project - Speech

This lesson happens after we've done a gallery walk and have learned about the Renaissance art/literature and creation of Protestantism during the Reformation. Students are assigned a person to research and create a 1-2 speech to describe the historical figure but keeping it in their POV (pretending to be "them"). They then put it into a slide that includes pictures. I've attached the graphic organizer that includes sentence starters options but it feels like EVERYONE uses the left side just to get it done rather than putting more creative thought into the assignment.
