Christmas Eve (Kūčios) is a more important day than Christmas Day. Kūčios is also the name of the big Christmas Eve meal which families have together during the evening of Christmas Eve. Kūčios is also the last day of Advent, so it is important and special. Many Lithuanian families like to gather around the tree after leaving the Christmas Eve dinner table and sing Christmas carols. We are having a great time then!
On the Christmas Eve we decorate our Christmas Trees with lamps and boubles. Sometimes we put also some sweets. We prepare 12 traditional dishes such as: carp, herring, borch with dumplings and so on. We set the table with one extra plate for unknown person who has noone to spend Christmas with.We get dressed smartly and get together. When the first star appear we start reading the Holly Bible and after it we share the wafer. Then we can unpack our Christmas presents. We start eating and at midnight we go to church for the mass. People say that at the midnight our pets and domestic animals start speaking.
On the 25th and 26th December we meet our families, eat too much and sing carols.
