Johnny's motivations

Johnny’s Motivation: The first example of Johnny using motivation to do something was when he killed the soc Bob. Johnny had motivation from when the socs had beat him up so badly and he was scared that it would happen again. Therefore, he used the motivation from past bullying to kill Bob. As shown with this quote, “"Yeah." His voice quavered slightly. "I had to. They were drowning you, Pony.

They might have killed you. And they had a blade... they were gonna beat me up...."

"Like..."--- I swallowed--- "like they did before?"

Johnny was quiet for a minute. "Yeah," he said, "like they did before."

(Page 50) The quote shows how Johnny was scared as he was shivering and was worried they would do the same thing as in the past.

Johnny’’s Motivation: The second example of Johnny having motivation to do something was when he ran away from his parents and did not let them see him in the hospital. Johnny used motivation from the past where his parents beat him and treated him poorly. He used that as a driving point for him to run away as he felt he left nothing behind. He also used that motivation when he declined his very own birth mother from seeing him, because of all the times she yelled at him and treated him so poorly. For example, “a nervous wreck

from getting belted every time [Johnny] turned around and from hearing his parents fight all the

time. Living in those conditions might have turned someone else rebellious and bitter; it

was killing Johnny.”(Page 30)

Johnny’s Motivation: The last example of Johnny’s motivation came when he had the motivation to live. His motivation came from his friends and thinking about all the things he hasn’t ever done. As one of his last quotes states” [Johnny] used to talk about

killing myself..." He drew a quivering breath. "I don't want to die now. It ain't long

enough. Sixteen years ain't long enough. I wouldn't mind it so much if there wasn't so

much stuff I ain't done yet--- and so many things I ain't seen. It's not fair. You know

what? That time we were in Windrixville was the only time I've been away from our neighborhood.”

As the quote shows, Johnny was very motivated to get life back into him because he hadn’t seen enough. He wanted to see more, and be more.

Johnny's Flaws

Johnny’s flaws: The first of Johnny’s flaws is his relations outside of his gang. The reason this is a flaw is because he is somewhat hated outside of his gang. Some examples, include his parents, socs, and the police. These all provide stress and strife because he is angry and stressed he has bad relations with his parents, constant stress over where a soc might appear, and stress that he may be caught by the police. The reason he may have this flaw is because he is accustomed to the way his gang does things while many people are not, therefore they clash do to different beliefs.

The second of Johnny’s flaws is that he smokes. This is obviously a flaw just regularly, but it causes stress and strife because he is stressful about getting cigarettes and trying to earn money or stealing it. And he is angry because he knows it’s bad for him but he can’t stop his addiction. The reason why he does this is because his gang and everyone else in his neighborhood do it, therefore, he wants to blend in. “Cherry and Marcia shook their heads at his offering of cigarettes, but Johnny and

I reached for one. Johnny's color was back and his breathing was regular, but his hand

was shaking ever so slightly. A cigarette would steady it.”(Page 28)

The quote shows that Johnny smokes and it also gives a good perspective that he is likely addicted to it since he reached for it so soon even in front of the girls, which he would seemingly try to make a good impression on.

Johnny's Strengths

Johnny’s strengths: One strength of Johnny is his ability to overcome adversity. This happens many times in the book, however, two stand out to me. The first was when the socs knocked him out and beat him up badly. Many people would run away and be scared forever, and be permanently changed, and while that did happen to Johnny, he also overcame it. He wasn’t nearly afraid as normal people would be the second time the socs came around. He also seeked revenge, and stood up for friends(such as ponyboy) when they were approached by socs.

The second example of Johnny’s ability to overcome adversity came near the end of the story, after he was placed in the hospital. Instead of immediately breaking down and giving up, Johnny spoke positively and thought of what he would do when he would get back to a “normal” routine. And while it may have not turned out well, he showed the right attitude to try and recover from his injury. What he did showed acts of strengths and a strong person. Overcoming adversity helps you to achieve your goals because you don’t easily give up or break down. You stay strong while building strong character.

A second example of Johnny’s strengths is his bravery. While there are once again many events that show his bravery, two stand out to me. The first one is when he rushed into the church to save the children. While many adults stood outside helplessly panicking, Johnny(along with ponyboy) rushed into the burning church to get the children out safely. This shows extreme acts of bravery as many adults that have been trained around him panicked, while a greaser that had a poor education and a bad life knew the right thing to do,(or maybe, the brave thing to do).

“and Johnny yelled, "Shut up! We're goin' to get you out!" The kid looked surprised and

quit hollering. I blinked myself--- Johnny wasn't behaving at all like his old self. He

looked over his shoulder and saw that the door was blocked by flames, then pushed open

the window and tossed out the nearest kid. I caught one quick look at his face; it was red

marked from falling embers and sweat streaked, but he grinned at me. He wasn't scared

Either.” (Page 78-79) As the quote shows, Johnny was brave and was trying everything he could to save the children.

The second example of Johnny’s bravery was when he stabbed Bob. This example was not

necessarily a strength in that current instance, but it showed self-defense bravery. When getting bullied, many people say you use self-defense. But the act of bravery you need in that type of instance to defend YOUR FRIEND(not even you) is tremendous. Being brave helps you achieve your goals because you take risks and you can do things you never thought you could, no matter how hard it seemed.

The last example of Johnny’s strength is his ability to be nice. An example of this could be once again applied with when he saved the kids from the burning church. But the main example I am using is his gang. The gang treats him with so much respect because he is never mean to anyone. He is nice to all of them, no matter what they do. The way this helps you achieve goals in life is very simple. You make more friends, which is generally good for self-morale and they can help you achieve thing you never knew how to do. Being nice generally has a good impact on everything you do in life.

Type of Character

Johnny’s type of character: It is hard to define whether Johnny is a protagonist or not, because although he plays a major role in the story, he is not the main character(onyboy). He is far from an antagonist because he doesn’t oppose Ponyboy, so i lean more towards the protagonist side as he is faced with a conflict. He is not liked by everyone, but that does not matter as protagonist does not necessarily mean “good guy”.

Johnny is definately a dynamic character as he is shy and seemingly calm at first, but as the story goes on(mainly after he kills Bob) he starts getting panicky and most of his view of the world changes(POV). For example, “Johnny Cade was last and least. If you can picture a little dark puppy that has

been kicked too many times and is lost in a crowd of strangers, you'll have Johnny.”

This shows Johnny was shy and probably scared and often bullied, which is how he starts during the story.(Page 11) However, later on, he states this quote “"Leave her alone, Dally."

"Huh?" Dally was taken off guard. He stared at Johnny in disbelief. Johnny

couldn't say "Boo" to a goose. Johnny gulped and got a little pale, but he said, “You heard me. Leave her alone.”

The second quote shows how he changed during the story so now he is more willing to speak up and is more brave to stand up to Dally.

Johnny is a round character because he is dynamic and also because he is very conflicted during the whole story. How to get away from socs, how to get away from police, how do I resolve my relations between my parents, who will win the fight?, Am I going to live? All these conflicts that arise among Johnny some time during the story that lead me to believe hs is a round character.

Johnny's Personality type test analysis

Analysis of personality test:

Personality type: “The Mediator” (INFP-T)

Individual traits: Introverted – 91%, Intuitive – 68%, Feeling – 81%, Prospecting – 94%, Turbulent – 85%.

Role: Diplomat

Strategy: Constant Improvement

The personality test seems fairly accurate, as most of these fit with Johnny.

Introverted(91%)- This seems fairly accurate as Johnny is shy/quiet the whole time. Some examples are when it says in the introduction Johnny is the gang’s pet and is very shy.(i think around page 10). Another is when at the movies Johnny did not want to start a conversation with the girls until Dally started going very aggressive.

Intuitive(68%) and Feeling(81%)- these two go together well. They are very accurate as it always

Seemed like Johnny went by his instincts rather than thinking things through. Two examples are when he stabbed Bob just by instinct without thinking about repercussions, and when he ran into the burning church without thinking what might happen to him.

Prospecting(94%)- this is once again very accurate as Johnny seemed very curious throughout the whole story. One example of this is when he went with Dally and Pony and “inspected”(robbed) the store. Another quiet yet good example was when he was reading “gone with the wind” as he seemed so curious about the story and the history.

Turbulent-(85%)- this seems somewhat accurate as after Johnny stabbed Bob he was never the same, he was conflicted and out of control. However, at the beginning of the story Johnny seemed pretty calm and not as conflicted. Some examples that show his turbulence was when he was about to die he was panicking and after he stabbed Bob he was making strange noises and was so afraid the police were out to get him.

Diplomat- this seems kind of right as Johnny is the gang’s pet. Without, Johnny it was never the same(1st example). That kind of shows him as a diplomat, like he was the leader. The 2nd example is when he was able to calm others down and be nice to everyone he acted like a diplomat.

Strategy: Constant improvement- This seems wrong because throughout the story Johnny seems to get more out of control and get more conflicted and scared.

Summary: Johnny seems to be a shy, Instinctive, curious, and a conflicted(shaken up) person. He showed examples of all of these traits in the story and fit him well. Diplomat seems like the right term to describe him.

One example of symbolism in the Outsiders is long hair worn by the Greasers. S.E Hinton most likely added this symbolism to give readers a better picture and understanding of the characters. “….just like we wear our hair long”(4). This shows an example of symbolism. Greasers like to wear their hair long and greasy because it represents them and they are proud of it because it makes them them. When Ponyboy describes this readers get a better view and feeling of what and who Greasers are.

Conflict

One example of Conflict in The Outsiders was when Johnny was fighting himself in the hospital. It showed an example of Person vs Self(Internal). It involved Johnny, and he was sharing his feelings to Ponyboy. “You want to know something, Ponyboy? I'm scared stiff. I used to talk about killing myself..." He drew a quivering breath. "I don't want to die now. It ain't long enough. Sixteen years ain't long enough. I wouldn't mind it so much if there wasn't so much stuff I ain't done yet--- and so many things I ain't seen. It's not fair. You know what? That time we were in Windrixville was the only time I've been away from our Neighborhood”(103). This quote shows an example of conflict when Johnny was fighting himself. He was emotionally and physically hurt, and he had one side of himself saying to stay positive and keep on, but the other side saying he’s about to die and there’s no point in trying anymore. He said this during the event because he was in the hospital and had a lot of depressing feelings go through him while going towards recovery. S.E. Hinton used conflict throughout the story to spark more interest and so we can understand the characters better. When Johnny said this, readers realized he was panicking and he was fighting against himself(Person vs Self).
