The First World War (July 28, 1914 – November 11, 2014), also known as the Great War, was a global conflict between two coalitions: the Allies (or Entente) and the Central Powers. Fighting took place mainly in Europe and the Middle East, as well as in parts of Africa and the Asia-Pacific. In Europe, it was characterized by trench warfare, the widespread use of artillery, machine guns, and chemical weapons (gas), and the introduction of tanks and aircraft. The First World War was one of the deadliest conflicts in history, resulting in an estimated 10 million military deaths and over 20 million wounded, in addition to an estimated 10 million civilian deaths from causes including genocide.

Key envents:

1914: War begins after Austria-Hungary declares war on Serbia; major powers join due to alliances.

1915–1916: Trench warfare dominates the Western Front; massive loss of life.

1917: Russia exits the war due to revolution; the U.S. enters the war on the Allied side.

1918: Allied offensives push back German forces; armistice signed on November 11.

Main sides:

Allied Powers: France, United Kingdom, Russia, Italy (joined in 1915), United States (joined in 1917), and others

Central Powers: Germany, Austria-Hungary, Ottoman Empire, Bulgaria

Consequences

Over 16 million deaths and 21 million wounded

Collapse of empires: Austro-Hungarian, Ottoman, Russian, and German

Treaty of Versailles (1919): Harsh penalties on Germany

Set the stage for World War II

The Second World War was a global military conflict that raged between 1939 and 1945. It involved most of the world's nations—including all the major powers, as well as virtually all European nations—grouped into two opposing military alliances: the Allies, on the one hand, and the Axis Powers, on the other. It was the largest war in human history, with more than 100 million military personnel mobilized and a state of total war in which the major contenders devoted their entire economic, military, and scientific capacity to the war effort, erasing the distinction between civilian and military resources. Marked by events of enormous impact, including the mass deaths of civilians (the Holocaust, mass bombings of cities, and the use, for the first time in a war, of nuclear weapons), the Second World War was the deadliest in history, resulting in between 50 and 70 million casualties, 2.5% of the world's population at the time.

The Cold War was a political, economic, social, ideological, military, and propaganda confrontation that took place after World War II between two main blocs: the Western (capitalist) and Eastern (communist) blocs. These blocs were led by the United States and the Soviet Union, respectively. The beginning of this period dates back to 1945. After World War II, the United States feared the spread of communism and sought to curb Soviet influence in Europe. In 1949, they created the military alliance known as the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO). NATO's main objective was to counter Soviet influence and guarantee the security of its member countries. In response to the creation of NATO, the Soviet Union established the Warsaw Pact in 1955. This military pact was a direct response to the Western bloc and sought to strengthen cooperation between communist countries. Throughout the Cold War, several crises occurred that increased tensions between the two blocs. Some of the most notable crises included the Berlin Blockade of 1948–1949, the second phase of the Chinese Civil War (1946–1949), the Korean War (1950–1953), the Suez Crisis of 1956, the Hungarian Uprising from October 23 to November 10, 1956, the Berlin Crisis of 1961, and the Cuban Missile Crisis of 1962
