on taboos

"If dung signifies the other side of the border, the place where I am not and which permits me to be, the corpse, the most sickening of wastes, is a border that has encroached upon everything." This discussion on corpses and dung reminds me of the notion of taboo, which to me reminds of this handy quote from the anthropologist Edmund Leach "Language gives us the names to distinguish the things; taboo inhibits the recognition of those parts of the continuum which separate the things." So in this sense, dung and corpses and other repugnant things are taboo because they blur the boundaries between defined opposable things, i.e. identity/ food & waste
