Even though this is about photojournalism, someone doing art or landscape photography would follow the same guidelines. Those guidelines being incorporating color, line, shape, form, value, texture, and space into the photo.

Photojournalists wouldn't experiment as much with these elements because their job doesn't necessarily require artsy work. The photo doesn't necessarily need to convey a happy emotion. It doesn't matter your age. The right photo has the capacity to make a huge impact on society. 

However, poorly composed images can have the opposite effect. Those photos that are under and over-exposed can hinder the images' aesthetic appeal greatly.
