The first screening

On December 28, 1895, the first public exhibition by the cinematographer Lumière took place in the Indien Salon of the Grand Café, at number 14 of the Boulevard des Capuchins in Paris. The program consisted of ten films of 15 to 20 meters each. These films were made by Louis Lumière and performed by his family and friends. The total duration was 20 minutes and the ticket price was 1 franc.

The cinematographer was very well received in much of the world. The Lumière brothers brought their invention to countries as far away as China or India.2 In Europe, it was exhibited at fairs and used as entertainment in vaudeville venues. Although vaudeville is normally related to the middle class, this apparatus achieved great popularity in all social classes.

Regarding its expansion into the United States, the Lumière operator Félix Mesguich was in charge of organizing the first screening at the Keith’s Theater in New York City.5 In this first contact, the audience responded enthusiastically. Other towns and cities quickly asked to be able to receive the projections of the cinematographer, but this demand was impossible to satisfy for the Lumière. This impossibility of satisfying it together with the isolation policy of the then President William McKinley led to the appearance of other machines to compete with them. In January 1897, the operator F. Mesguich was arrested while filming on the street under the pretext that he did not have permission to do so. In June of the same year, the customs administration declared the entry into the country of the material necessary for the projections to be irregular.5 These events led to the withdrawal of the cinematographer from the US market

Beginning of creation

Beginning in 1892, they began working on the possibility of photographing moving images. They patented a significant number of notable progress.

Returning from a trip to Paris, Antoine Lumière brought a kinetoscope. The brothers examined it carefully and soon conceived a project that would come true based on existing inventions. They created an apparatus that served as both a camera and a projector: the cinematograph, which was based on the effect of the retinal persistence of images on the human eye. In the beginning, they themselves loaded the pieces of the film camera into a drawer to transport it from one place to another.
