Discovery: first colonised by the Lapita people who explored the south pacific. James Cook later discovered it in 1774.

Wildlife: New Caledonia has 27 endemic species of birds and an undescribed specie of storm petrel. Probably the most notable of birds on the island is called the kagu. It is a white ground dwelling bird with its own taxonomic family and is the island's national animal. New Caledonia has no mammals except flying foxes, bats and marine mammals such as dolphins and dugongs. New Caledonia also boasts over 50,000 square miles of protected marine ecosystems. On top of this the island also has 3,270 thousand plant species many of which are endemic.
