On a Saturday morning at 7 a.m., a car stopped at the house, and Molly's sister's husband, Albert, got out. Jackie came out to open the door and welcomed him, then went to the dining room. Albert, Molly's second son, sat next to Roger. Albert asked Molly who that Peter was. He had stopped him on the street, saying he was very angry with her. Jackie replied that he was Peter Hobbs and that he had lost his job because of Molly last week. Jackie then asked how her Aunt Annie's health was. Albert told her that she was in a critical state and needed a nurse 24 hours a day. He told Molly that she was very sad because Molly wasn't going to visit her, and that Annie loved Molly. He also said that she knew it and that she was her younger sister, but she wanted her to understand that supporting her was very expensive. From there, the topic discussed at the table turned to money. Coincidentally, Molly had a lot of money, and they started talking about things they would like to have, some of which were Molly's possessions. Molly got up from the table very angry because it was implied that they only wanted her for her fortune. She then left the kitchen, and Diane whispered that one day she would kill that woman.

The story begins with Jackie, a thirty-year-old woman, coming in from the garden. She receives a phone call from her younger sister, Diane, who is twenty years old and lives in London. Diane wants to be a singer but has not had any success. She calls to ask for money to buy a train ticket because she wants to visit the family for the weekend. Jackie is annoyed because Diane always asks for money.

Jackie informs her mother, Molly, about the call and Diane’s request. Molly, a tall woman with beautiful eyes, is busy preparing for the weekend and asks Jackie to run some errands. During this conversation, they also mention a man named Peter Hobbs, who is angry with Molly because of a letter she sent, which caused him to lose his job.

This excerpt introduces family tensions related to responsibilities, expectations, and conflicts between the sisters and their mother.

His physical appearance is described briefly: he wears old blue trousers and a dirty orange shirt, indicating a rough and unkempt look. His anger is significant because he blames Molly for his job loss and even expresses that he wants to kill her. However, despite his anger, he does not act on these threats, and he is ultimately not involved in her death

Acording to the book in ch 4 "He lost his job because of my mother.
