"She holds him, and for a moment it seems as if everything is okay, as if they are the only two people on Earth. For that instant, Connor feels invincible, untouchable...but she lets go, the moment passes, and the world around him returns" (Shusterman 3).
After Connor finds out his unwinding papers, he and Ariana go to a ledge over the freeway. Connor normally goes to this ledge alone, but today, he brought Ariana to be his distraction from the news he has received; Ariana is Connor’s escape from the world during this hard time in his life. When Ariana holds Connor, he feels as if the whole world and all his worries have disappeared. For that moment, Connor forgets about his unwinding, his parents, and even the rumbling of the freeway; Connor is escaping reality through Ariana. All he sees, feels, and hears is Ariana. She makes him feel like he cannot be touched by anyone, not his parents or the Juvey-cops. But, the moment fleets; as soon as Ariana lets go of Connor, Connor’s thoughts and consciousness of the world return.

"They hold each other in the tight space, making no excuses for it. There's no time left in their lives for games, or for awkwardness, or for pretending they don't care about each other, and so they kiss as if they've done it forever. As if it is as crucial as the need for oxygen" (Shusterman 285).
Risa and Connor live very separate lives at Happy Jack Harvest Camp because they were separated upon their arrival, but after a couple of days there, Risa and Connor meet in the girls’ bathroom. They waste no time seeing each other; they hold each other and kiss as if there is no tomorrow, and considering their situation, that may be the case. Risa and Connor escape from the craziness and uncertainness of Happy Jack by being in each other’s arms and kissing each other. While they have this meeting, the world fades away into nothing. They only need each other to live. They only need each other to escape reality.

"It's asleep and right now, in this place and at this moment, there's something so comforting about holding it in his arms, he's thankful he saved it. And he thinks that if his soul had a form, this is what it would be. A baby sleeping in his arms" (Shusterman 112).
After Connor writes his letter to his parents, he has to take the baby from Risa while she writes her letter. After picking up the baby off the porch, Connor has not spent much time with it, but in this moment, having the baby in his arms is relieving. The baby distracts Connor from the pain of the letter he just wrote and his unknown future. For this instant, reality vanishes, and all Connor acknowledges is the baby. Although Connor expressed his reason for taking the baby, this is the first time Connor admits to being thankful for taking the baby. Connor is thankful for the baby’s innocence in the midst of corruption.

"Risa has the baby to keep her occupied. It requires a huge amount of attention, and although she gripes about the responsibility, Connor can tell she's thankful simply to have something to help pass the hours" (Shusterman 100).
Although Risa complains about having to take care of the baby, the baby keeps Risa occupied. During her time at Sonia’s, Risa cares for the baby by nurturing it and acting as its mother. Risa cares for the baby all day and night without second thought. Risa feeds the baby with a technique she learned at StaHo when she helped the nurses with the babies in the infant wing. Caring for the baby helps Risa escape from reality and distracts her from the grimness of Sonia’s. The baby helps Risa distracted from reality by keeping Risa from having to socialize frequently with the other AWOLs because she has her own room for her and the baby to stay.

"CyFi might still be playing the role of leader, but it's Lev who is now in charge. There's a guilty pleasure in knowing that CyFi would fall apart if Lev weren't there to hold him together." (Shusterman 183).
After CyFi’s incident, Lev has taken over as the primary source of survival for him and CyFi. Lev has no problem taking over this role because CyFi has thought him his ways, and Lev enjoys having someone to take care of. Caring for CyFi is a way for Lev to stay hidden and distracted from his current situation. Lev is still on the run when he is with CyFi, but at least with CyFi, Lev knows where he is going. Lev uses CyFi to feel in control of his life; Lev enjoys having a plan and CyFi is the perfect person for that.

"Common sense tells Risa to distance herself from him. Their alliance has been one of necessity, but there's no reason to ally herself with him anymore. Yet, day after day, she keeps finding herself drawn to him...and worried about him" (Shusterman 144).
Risa knows that distancing herself from Connor is the best option to keep herself safe, but yet, she is continuously drawn to him. Risa does not understand why she is drawn to him, but Connor is a good distraction for Risa. Helping Connor distracts Risa from the reality of her situation. Instead of constantly thinking about how she is going to survive until she is eighteen or how she does not have adequate food to eat, Risa worries about Connor and keeping him out of trouble, especially when it comes to fighting and Roland. Risa has been looking out for Connor by keeping an eye on Roland, and how Roland is trying to use Connor. Risa gives Connor this insight to protect him from harm.

"It's amazing that something as simple as a kiss can overpower the worst of worries" (Shusterman 234).
a. Upon their arrival to the Graveyard, Risa and Connor have been living off of a vigorous schedule. They don’t have as much free time to spend with each other, so when Risa and Connor got to see each other in the library, Risa worries about Connor and his well-being. Connor tells Risa of his run ins with the Admiral and how he is concerned for Risa being chosen by the Admiral as a replacement Golden. But, Connor loses words, and those words were replaced with a kiss. Connor and Risa’s first kiss not only took Connor’s words away, but it also took away all their worries of the future. During that kiss, nothing else matters. Connor and Risa are each other’s escape from reality.
