It is the national sport of Argentina since 1953.
Pato is Spanish for "duck", as early games used a live duck inside a basket instead of a ball.Accounts of early versions of pato have been written since 1610. The playing field would often stretch the distance between neighboring estancias (ranches). The first team to reach its own casco (ranch house) with the duck would be declared the winner.

One sport that is very popular among the east coast of the United States is field hockey. I played this sport all throughout elementary and middle school, and loved every second of it. This sport is usually played outside, but can be played indoors in field houses. Typically each team is composed of 11 players who use sticks curved at the striking end to hit a small, hard ball into their opponents goal. It is very similar to ice hockey, and dates back to some of the earliest civilizations. The Arabs, Greeks, Persians, Romans, and Aztec Indians of South America, all had their own versions of this sport. During the Middle Ages a French stick game called hoquet was played, which is where the word "hockey" originated from. This sport has become increasingly popular among women. The first Women's World Cup was held in 1974, and women's hockey became an Olympic event in 1980. This sport is very unique because team work and communication are extremely important, in order to be successful at it. Also this sport requires lots of multitasking, for example, you need to always be on the defense and ready to steal the ball from the opposing team, while also being focused on scoring into your goal as well. This sport requires lots of conditioning, including running, and learning many stick skills.

Lacrosse is a Native Northern American sport. Specially from the Iroquois tribe found in New York, Pennsylvania and the boarded of Canada. It is estimated that Lacrosse goes back to around 1100 AD, which makes it US’s oldest sport (by a lot.) The name “Lacrosse” comes from when a French Jesuit missionary saw the Natives playing and called it “the stick” or “la crosse” in French. Lacrosse has gone through many evolution from what it originally was. Today the sport is played a stick with netting at the top and a small rubber ball. The ball is thrown, caught and carried between two teams while trying to shoot it into the goal. The first intercollegiate lacrosse game was played in 1877 between New York University and Manhattan College. The latest NCAA National Championship weekend tournament draws over 80,000 fans and the sport is counting to grow in popularity.

Ultimate Frisbee is a non-contact sport which has grown in popularity for both men and women very recently in the United States. The sport developed in the late 1960’s by a group of students at Columbia High School in MapleWood, New Jersey. Ultimate Frisbee is played with a frisbee, also known as a “disk”, on a field similar to that of a football field between two teams of seven. The rules of Ultimate Frisbee require each team to start by lining up on the front of their respective endzone. The defense will throw the frisbee to the offense and each time the offense completes a pass in the defense’s endzone, the offense scores a point. Play should reset after each point. As the fundamental sport of Ultimate Frisbee is strange in comparison to others in the United States, it is the spirit of the game which makes the sport even more unique. The community of Ultimate Frisbee players stress the ideas of sportsmanship and fair play. As competitive play is highly encouraged, it is never condoned at the expense of another player’s respect or the rules of the game.

"Beer Die" is a beer drinking game which is very common to play at universities in America. There are two teams, each team with 2 people on it, who stand at opposite ends of a table. Each person puts a cup of beer in their corner of the table, and there is a line drawn across the center of the table which separates the 2 teams. The object of the game is to throw a die over a certain height with the goal of either landing the die in the opponent's cup, or having the die hit the table across the line and bounce once before it hits the floor. The defending team tries to catch the die (using only one hand) after it hits the table, but before it touches the ground. If the die lands into one of the cups of the opponent or hits the ground before the opponent can catch it, a point is awarded to the offensive team. Any time a player throws the die and misses the table completely or a die is thrown into a players cup, that player must drink their beer.

Snowboarding is a sport most popular in the Midwest to Western states in the US because the largest mountains and mot beautiful landscapes are found here. Smaller ski resorts can also be found in most other states throughout the US. Snowboarding is an individual sport done by wearing firm, supportive boots, strapping into a board, and gliding down a snowy mountain. In the Olympics, professional snowboarders compete in competitions such as slopestyle, halfpipe, big air, and cross and parallel slalom. Snowboarding was first included in the Olympics in Nagano, Japan in the 1998 winter Olympics. This sport was invented by Sherman Poppen when he attached two skis together in 1965 in the state of Michigan. This sport is very popular in the winter because people off al ages can participate as long as they have some balance. Kids as young as two or three and adults into their eighties re able to participate in snowboarding. Snowboarding is a fairly non competitive sport unless competing in competitions. Normally, it is a sport for pleasure that brings friends and families together and provides a way to get outdoors during the winter months.

Surfing is a sport that is popular in states like California and Hawaii because of their abundance of beaches and the Pacific provides the perfect conditions for catching waves. However, surfing can be done wherever there is coastline. The term surfing refers to the act of riding a wave usually on a board standing up but can be done without a board as well, although it is not as common. Surfing has also created a different and unique kind of culture among those who participate in the sport. Surfers compete in competitions where they perform different and difficult maneuvers through the waves and test their abilities to ride waves. While surfing has not historically been part of the Olympics, it will make it's debut in the summer 2020 Olympics.

"Fingerhakeln" is an old athletic sport practiced in the countries of the Alps, mostly in Bavaria and Austria. Both opponents are sitting at a table opposite to each other and try to pull the opponent on the finger over the table. In the past, disputes were settled this way in the Alps. Today, Fingerhakeln is an organized sport with standartized rules and competitions in different age and weight classes. Usually the opponents hook their middle finger in a leather strap, but technically every finger is allowed, also without a strap. By physical force, overcoming the stretching pain and an appropriate technique, the opponent can be defeated. The German saying "Jemanden über den Tisch ziehen", which means to fool someone, originates from this sport.

Rodeo is a competitive sport and celebration that is popular across the state of Texas. It has many events such as tie-down roping, team roping, steer wrestling, and bull riding. Bull riding is perhaps the most entertaining. It involves someone riding an angry and massive bull and if they can hold on with one hand in the air for at least 8 seconds they win. These events are based on the historical skills necessary for vaqueros and cowboys. The first competitive rodeo occured in 1869 and rodeo is the official state sport of Texas. I personally have been to a number of rodeos and in addition to competition they often have good food, carnival rides, and even live music performances. Showing that rodeo is often times more than a sport and quite often a cultural and social experience.

Growing up in a rural community in North Carolina, outdoor sports are a big part of cultural life, especially hunting and fishing. Growing up, I was always very into bowhunting. This is the act of hunting animals (usually deer and turkey in NC) using a bow and arrow. A sport that stems off of this practice is called 3D archery. These are archery tournaments that are centered around making shots that simulate hunting situations. The targets are life-size 3D models of game animals. The tournament is set up similar to a golf tournament. There are usually 15-30 targets, spread out through something like a golf course. Each target is like a hole in golf. There are specific places where the archer must stand in order to make the shot. The idea is to simulate the most difficult of hunting situations. Archery is largely based on judging how far away your target is because you need to know where to aim based on the flight path of the arrow. This means that archers must judge the distance to the target accurately, shoot from precarious positions, and score points based on the accuracy of their shooting. The targets are marked with scoring rings that are placed differently depending on the animal, but generally an arrow placed in the heart region is worth the most points. There are scoring rings that are worth less and less points the further away from center they are. I love this sport because it is a great way to improve your archery skills for real life hunting, and it also creates a really fun atmosphere that allows you to be out in nature.

When I think of American sports I usually think about football, basketball, or baseball. Therefore, I consider Handball to be a popular and different sport. "Handball in America, is a sport in which players use their hands to hit a small rubber ball against a wall such that their opponent cannot do the same without it touching the ground twice. The three versions are four-wall, three-wall and one-wall. Each version can be played either by two players (singles), three players (cutthroat) or four players (doubles), but in official tournaments, singles and doubles are the only versions played (Wikipedia).¨I often played handball in high school during recess and after school. The sport is not as valued as other sports, but at least for inner city students they had something fun to do after school. Not to mention, the sport was typically played by Latin Americans in impoverished neighborhoods. In opinion it's beneficial and accessible for everyone despite socioeconomic status. For this reason, I love the sport!
Work Cited:
Retrieved from: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/American_handball
