This bridge was defended by the Portuguese against a French army for a cansiderable time. As said care is needed walking on it as it is quite narrow and cars go by quite fast.

The actual construction dates from the 18th century as in 1763 the previous building collapsed leading to the reconstruction of a previous bridge. In fact here passat the Roman road that linked Amarante to Guimaraes and Braga hence there were enough conditions for hacking here a Roman bridge previously to the mendieval one.

After the bridge collapse in 1763 the images of Nossa Senhora da Piedade and the Crucified Christ that were in the centre of the bridge were transferred to the Sao Gonçalo Church.
