Reading Strategies:

One of the suggested reading strategies was to use a teacher voice. I think it could be modified to talk like a teacher. This could be fun to see who can do the best impression of you—not for the thin-skinned teacher. Probably would get a few laughs and definitely would be a class they would remember.
"Use a Teaching Voice” page 41 Reading Strategies Book.

Big fan of this - It's quick, easy to manage and gets the students thinking about the topic and is a a good test of prior knowledge. Bad writers or students with no strong opinion get an out, but still participate.

GM

3 Reading Strategies:
-Sketching Through the Text - students read an article and then sketch out a quick pic that helps them remember information in the article.
-Reading a Visual Image - find an image, cover it with tiles, project it onto a screen, reveal the image one section at a time. As the pic is revealed piece by piece, ask students questions about what they see: i. e. What do you notice about the setting?
-Jigsaw - I am planning on using the Jigsaw method with students while they read passages that cover DNA. In small teams, students will read assigned sections and then discuss important content presented within their short passage. After a given time frame, students from each team will present their findings to the rest of the class. This is a winning strategy, no doubt!

~MKelley

Schlechty Center has many helpful links that will help the kids understand, and perhaps enjoy graphing. What I really liked about a few of the sites is that the students have the opportunity to practice their reading skills, then graph the meaning. The “stories” that are offered apply to their everyday life which makes it interesting to them.
-Moralez
