This choice was, while completely horrific and wrong, somewhat ingenious. Using his logic, he would have an army that would fight to the death for him. The situation that they were put through an absolute atrocity and I truly feel sorry for what they went through. The loneliness that they must have experienced is heartbreaking. The initial shock I had when reading surprised me because I already knew of the tragic genocide performed against the Jewish population, and yet hearing it written out was still jarring. Jewish and German friendships were broken off in order to save face, and fit in with everyone else. Alfons and Heinz stopped being friends partly because Alfons would be moving up within the ranks of the Hitler Youth and could not be seen fraternizing with the likes of a Jew. It makes me wonder if their were any romantic relationships, or even more platonic ones, that had to be broken off because of the Nazi movement.
