I chose this passage because as I was reading, the fact that the teacher would resort to social and mental punishment as opposed to the normal physical punishment confused me. It seemed that the effects of ridiculement were seen as more effective than just outright harming the offending Jew. This passage stands out because it’s shocking to hear this difference in how Jews were treated. It makes me wonder why the German would essentially physically abuse their own preferred kind, while using their words to harm the Jews. #confusion

I chose this quote because I find it curious that Hitler was able to concoct his scheme, and come to the realization that bring in up children with ideals in mind would breed him a loyal army who wholely believe in him. This choice was, while completely horrific and wrong, somewhat ingenious. Using his logic, he would have an army that would fight to the death for him. This quote stood out of the horrific and villainous genius that is shown through these actions. This quote makes me wonder what would have happened had Hitler appealed to the adults instead of the children. #evilgenius

I chose this passage because it gave a sense of cold desolation when I thought of how the Jews must have felt as this happened. The situation that they were put through an absolute atrocity and I truly feel sorry for what they went through. The loneliness that they must have experienced is heartbreaking. It makes me wonder what exactly was running through their minds. I also wonder if there were any Germans who did want to say goodbye to the Jews being taken away. #isolation

I chose this passage because of the horrific description of plan for murder of the thousands of Jews. The initial shock I had when reading surprised me because I already knew of the tragic genocide performed against the Jewish population, and yet hearing it written out was still jarring. I think that no matter how many times you hear of something as terrible as the Holocaust, you never lose the shock that something like that actually happened. This passage stands out because it made me think about our work today and would happen if someone tried to enact something of this scale. #curiousshock

I chose this quote because when hearing the description of all the jobs that children were given, it struck me at how dangerous their lives actually were. So many children and teens were put to work or sacrificed in Hitler’s war efforts. It makes me wonder what their lives would have been like had they not been forced into war. These children grew up being forced into work and their childhoods normalized violence and hatred. The quote ended up standing out because i couldn’t even imagine young children doing this kind of manual labor and teens having to operate large guns to shoot kill others. #childhardships

I chose this quote because it really put into perspective d how much faith Hitlers followers had in him. It’s actually quite disappointing that Alfons believes that the day he met Hitler could never be measured up to by anything else in his life. This stood out out to me because he is saying that the possibility of him getting married and having children doesn’t excite him as much a meeting the ring leader of a mass murder. This level of devotion that Hitler incites from his followers is a terrifying thing, especially if you consider what they all stood for. #devoted&terrfied

I chose this quote because having to read the situation that the condemned Jews suffered through pulled on my heartstrings. As I was reading I felt sympathetic and even a little pity towards those in the ghettos. It made me wonder if that is what those who live in third world countries feel like. As I thought about these people and their similar situation, I was saddened at the prospect that their are people in this world who are suffering to this extent. The quote itself caught my attention because of the abrupt description of the horrors. #sympathy

I chose this quote because it shows how the Nazi movement pulled people apart. Jewish and German friendships were broken off in order to save face, and fit in with everyone else. Alfons and Heinz stopped being friends partly because Alfons would be moving up within the ranks of the Hitler Youth and could not be seen fraternizing with the likes of a Jew. It makes me wonder if their were any romantic relationships, or even more platonic ones, that had to be broken off because of the Nazi movement. The quote stood out because it shows that those in the Hitler Youth were willing to do anything to move up in the ranks. #breakoff

I chose this quote because it shows just how little the Nazis actually cared for the well being of their prisoners. The lackluster supplies provided to the victims portrays that they had no regards for basic human necessities. This quote stuck out because the dire situation that the Jewish prisoners were in is one that really makes people think about their life and how good they truly have it. It makes me wonder what else we take for granted. #nocaresforgranted

I chose this quote because as I was reading, I was appalled at the rate that the German children were forced to grow up at. They should not have been forced into matters of shooting people and knowledge of battle. This stood out because I realized that in some countries, there are still young boys and girls being forced into situations similar to this. It makes me wonder why the world seems to value a young child’s life as a lesser value than the violence and killings that war incites. #disappointed
