Hitler was able to gradually rise by taking advantage of the weakening Weimar Republic; the Weimar Republic was heavily criticized after Germany's defeat in WWI. The public resented the Republic because they had accepted the conditions the Treaty of Versailles presented for Germany, which were very restrictive. Additionally, the Republic were not effective in passing new laws due to the Parliament's state preventing them from passing bills to fight against the Great Depression. Hitler began to build up his support through the Nationalist Socialist Worker's Party (formerly known as German's Workers Party); the Nationalist Socialist Worker's Party's agenda focused on ending the Treaty of Versailles, living space for the superior Germans, and the persecution of Jews. The public began to trust in the 🤬 Party, which was evident in the Election of 1933 when the 🤬 Party secured 43.9% of the votes, but they were still slightly short the majority. However, due to Hitler's popular support he was able to pass the Enabling Law granting him powers equivalent to the chancellor.

Nazis were exceptionally good at controlling and manipulating the average Germans to believe in Nazism through their leader, extensive police force, policies, propaganda, etc. Hitler was described by many as a charismatic leader and a good public speaker. He appointed Joseph Goebbels as the head of of the Ministry of Public Enlightenment that was in charge of spreading propaganda throughout Germany who was also considered a great, charismatic public speaker. Goebbels skills in speech made him perfect for the radio; he also had to oversee propaganda TV, film, art, music, etc. The countless propaganda surrounded average Germans in their daily lives, which made it easier for the 🤬 Party to gain influence and keep it.

Hitler’s government’s foreign policy aimed at the incorporation of ethnic Germans (Volksdeutsche) living outside German borders into the Reich; German domination of west Europe; and acquisition of a new empire of living space (Lebensraum) in eastern Europe.

-Germany followed a policy aimed at overcoming the restrictions imposed on Germany by the Treaty of Versailles such as the demilitarized Rhineland and limitations on German armaments.

-October 1933- Germany renounced from the League of Nations

-January 1934- Germany signed a Nonaggression pact with Poland

-1935- Hitler began to rearm Germany, he introduced conscription aiming to increase the German army to half a million men, five times the figure allowed under the Treaty of Versailles

The unwillingness of western neighbors to oppose German rearmament encouraged Hitler’s expansionism.
