UNIT ONE - THE RESEARCH PROCESS

By being requested to produce a Power Point presentation on the research process /paper, I was able to grasp or obtain a better understanding of the facets of a research paper such as title or cover page, abstract, introduction, literature review, methodology, theoretical framework, results/findings and analysis and finally conclusion and recommendation if any. Insight was provided on what exactly research and the research process were and the five stages in the process. Formulating the hypothesis and analyzing the data in my opinion, are two of the most difficult and crucial aspects of the research process.

This unit enabled obtaining a little more information about survey research. This included the types of research such as explanatory and descriptive. Survey research assists in obtaining social information which is usually both quantitative and qualitative through questionnaires. The information gathered from research is used by a wide variety of individuals for different purposes. During this week we were to submit an overview on a topic for research. I chose the topic vagrancy.

At this point conceptualization, operationalization and measurement are looked at in addition to the readability and validity of data. What we mean when we use specific terms and using indicators, scales and indexes and descriptions. A concept map was created on the topic of Survey Sampling.

The use and design of a questionnaire as a survey instrument was the focus of this unit. What was learnt is that the effectiveness of the survey would be dependent on how effective the instrument is at gathering information. Questionnaires are a valuable method of collecting a wide range of information from a large number of respondents. Its important aspects of its construction include the terminology, complexity, content, placement or question order and physical layout.

A great deal of information was gathered on the different methods of conducting research such as the questionnaire and interview, the different types and the pros and cons relating to each method. The unit focused on efficient ways of collecting high quality data and the activities conducted to prepare for the survey such as budgeting and selecting the sample, interviewers and ensuring a well planned out instrument. A Powerpoint presentation was conducted on the 2011 Population and Housing Census in Dominica and a review of two presentations by my peers.
