Our school board does two things that boggle all our minds:

1) They vote to not move the start of the school year back by a week to give us more time to prep for distance learning

2) They vote to keep our normal bell schedule, meaning the kids (and teachers) will be online for 6 hours a day.

Most of us, especially myself, started the year feeling horribly supported and wildly unprepared.

For the first quarter, we really tried to operate as normal. I knew it was not right, but I tried anyway. This mainly applies to my AP US History classes. It was my first year teaching the course, and I really didn't wanna have crap AP scores. I stayed up until midnight or beyond pretty much every school night during this period.

By the time we got to October, it was apparent the kids had hit the wall (I hit it in like late August haha). We all thought that our week off after the first quarter would be super rejuvenating. NOPE. The kids came back just as tired as they were before break. It was at that point that I kinda sorta said screw it and began to focus on the kids' mental health, which is what I wanted to do all along but felt trapped by a district that insisted on a "business as usual" approach. They are monsters, and I hate them 🤬

Once I kind of let go, things felt a little bit more normal, inasmuch as that was possible. I got back to being weird, which is a good thing. The kids, as usual, followed suit. No, we didn't take as many quizzes and we probably didn't learn as much as I had hoped, but I still think I did right by them. We laughed a lot 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

**I realized how dumb quizzes were from the start, but was simply trying to fake my way through it for a long as possible.

THE RETURN: April 2021

We began hybrid learning in April. From a pedagogical standpoint, it was a mess. But, it was PHENOMENAL to have kids back! We finished out the year pretty strongly I'd say. After the AP Exam, I let the kids know that I'd be leaving for a new school. I didn't anticipate getting emotional, but I kind of did. A few kids did as well, which still blows me away. I always knew this, but I suppose this year solidified the idea that getting along with the kids is first and foremost what my job is all about. The rest kind of has a way of taking care of itself.
