Amannda Richline’s interests include running, and she has competed in the New York Marathon.

Approximately 65 to 80 percent of runners will suffer an injury in any given year, often as a result of training mistakes and/or choosing the wrong running gear. For example, overtraining can lead to a variety of injuries. A steady progression of mileage improves performance and reduces the likelihood of injury, so medical professionals encourage runners training for an event to follow the 10 Percent Rule by limiting their increase in miles run to no more than 10 percent weekly.

Properly fitted running shoes are another important aspect of avoiding injury. Running shoes should be a half-size larger than everyday shoes to accommodate swelling, which is typical during long runs, and they should be replaced as they become worn and lose their shock absorbency.
