After they lost this position they wanted to find a way to earn it back. The way they came up with was to colonize Africa and once they were able to do this, they were able to win back their trade and sea power. By doing this, they were able to compete with parts of Africa such as South West Africa and Cameroons. They wanted to compete with Britain for more land in Africa. Britain already encountered so much land in Africa that Germany felt they needed more.
