  • China’s Population = over 1.4 billion
  • In 1979, China introduced their one-child policy (Listen to the recording for more information!)
  • China’s retirement age → 60 for men, 55 for female civil servants, and 50 for female workers
    • BUT,
      • As of 2020, 17.4% of China’s population was at 60 years old and above
      • By 2040, an estimated 28% of China’s population will be at 60 years old and above
Effects:
  • Currently, 
    • 17.4% of the population at 60+ years old → 17.4% of the population already at retirement age/nearly at retirement age → 17.4% of the population unable to contribute to the economy’s output
  • If this continues, by 2040, 
    • 28% of the population at 60+ years old → 28% of the population already at retirement age/nearly at retirement age → 28% of the population unable to contribute to the economy’s output
  • In a growing economy like China’s, an aging population is NOT what they need. In order to continue stable economic growth, China needs WORKING PEOPLE contributing to the economy’s output. 

Solution:
  • Encourage the elderly to remain in the labor force by raising the retirement age
    • Improves the elderly’s monetary status
    • Leads to higher tax revenue and more consumer spending, which will be beneficial for economic growth

  • China = world’s largest rice producer, world’s 7th largest rice exporter
    • BUT,
      • 60% of its groundwater is polluted
      • 3 million hectares of farmland has poor soil
Effects:
  • Poor soil → rice is harder to grow
  • Affects China’s economy → they won’t be able to export as much rice
  • They become dependent on the USA for rice supply → NOT what China wants

Solutions: 
  • Grow potatoes instead!
    • Easy to grow on bad soil 
    • Carb, which can act as a substitute for rice
    • High vitamin C content 
    • Universal stud → Many other countries also have high demands for potatoes, so China can benefit economically from this as well!

Fun Fact: China has recently noticed their rice problem, so they started promoting potatoes around the country! Watch this informative video featuring a member of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP), ‘Sister Potato’, who loves potatoes!
