The ability to handle criticism, and know if it's constructive or not, is a really important skill, that may take a little bit longer to develop, and that is okay. Everyone's life experience is a little different.

It's a never ending process that becomes easier when you develop confidence. It's all part of growing as a performer.

Without confidence, a lot of criticism can feel like a threat.

Most of us want you to do well. The longer you stay in show business, the easier it becomes to spot the ones that don't. We've spent time and money to see you, or take a class with you, you got this!

I had a roommate who thought everything was threatening him. He wanted to be a successful actor in five months in LA. He imploded, tried to fight me, and of course this story ends with, and he moved back to Florida right before COVID. Don't be this guy.

Thanks to the internet, most people who don't want you to do well hide in the comment section now.

Constructive Criticism

The best criticism is constructive criticism. A helpful, honest, respectful, and consenting conversation on improvement can work wonders on a performer's psyche. In the very least, a few warranted good ideas could bring a performance to new heights.

In the world of Stand up Comedy, a comedian can offer another comic feedback or constructive criticism on how to punch up a joke, or adding an additional joke (tag). This is very helpful if it's coming from an established, or more experienced comic (most of the time, if the joke doesn't bomb).

Criticism can also help inspire a new way to tell a joke, or give an actor a different perspective on their character, thus enhancing the actor's world on stage.

It's great to be in a collective of actors that all want to succeed, because the chances of negative criticism decrease if we're all trying to learn. We learn every day.

Also, no one wants an actor who is negatively stuck in their own head. Thankfully, that's never happened, am I right?

Negative Criticism! Sashay Away!

There's no place for it.

I was told several times in Film School that there is no room for people with hearing problems in front of the camera or onstage, because it's annoying. I spent most of film school trying to hide my hearing loss. But that's Florida! I'm realizing now, that there might be a fine line between criticism and discrimination.

Negative criticism can be used as fuel to suceed, but it's not healthy to use that method all of the time. Eventually, you really should start to make the attempt to believe in yourself.

What can be said about negative criticism that I haven't said to my therapist?

There is already so much hate in the world right now, we don't need anymore.

I'm sure most of us as actors have received our first batch of a negative criticism from a family member or someone at school, who will never believe in us. This says a lot more about them, then it does about you. I'm very glad we're all here following our dreams, living life the way we want.

If an actor gives another actor negative feedback. It might be a reflection of the actor's own performance. An actor's frustration is a scary thing, so is an angry Aunt from New Jersey who wants me to become a cop. What good is a deaf cop going to be, if the suspect puts a silencer on his gun?

There is no better way to learn about handling negative criticism other than being a stand up comedian. I'm really thankful. In the beginning, bombing on stage can be brutal. Sometimes you may find out a comic is just a bully in disguise, looking for an outlet for his negative thoughts. You can learn real fast about silence. You'll know when a comic loved your material. They won't awkwardly say, "great set," without looking in your directing before running to their car, frantically reaching for their car keys, when they know they called an Uber. With my three years of comedy, I'm not afraid to look stupid in class.

I'm going to quote Ru Paul, "If they ain't paying your bills, pay them b___ no mind." I know that's Trixie Mattel up there.
