When I first moved to PA and started in first grade I did not want to go to school because I was being bullied and experienced racism for the first time in my life. My first grade teacher, Mrs. Weihbrecht, made me very comfortable in her classroom and inspired me to want to become an elementary school teacher myself.

I learned so much from my 4th grade teacher Mrs. Boardman. She taught us the alphabet in sign language and I still remember it now about 16 years later. I took an ASL course here at LCCC and the foundation of knowing the alphabet helped me succeed in that course. She would do fun events for our whole grade to attend such as our "wax museum". At the time, Barack Obama was getting ready to become the first Black president of the United States so I chose to be his wife, Michelle Obama, for our wax museum.

Middle school was interesting time in my life. I was not doing well in school so my mom decided to homeschool me and my twin sister for 7th grade and we went back in 8th grade. We were still able to play sports (my sister played softball) and I played field hockey and ran track, so we were still able to stay connected with our friends.

Mr. Tannous was my middle school principal. You did not want to get on his bad side. When he walked through the hallways you could hear a pin drop, nobody messed around when he was walking through the hallway. He was very intimidating and we had a few encounters about my grades here and there. It did not have to take much for him to get it in my head that I had to get my grades up if I wanted to participate in sports. He wanted the best for us!

By the time I got to high school there was still a small amount of minorities in our town, and we all stuck together. I can count on both of my hands how many times we had an encounter with racism and people calling us the "n word". We were not allowed to walk in the hallways together to class because people were "intimidated" by us (& yes, that is the reason we were told we had to separate in the hallways). It's not like we were fooling around in the hallway, we were just simply walking together as a group to our next class.

Track and Field

During my freshman year of high school I played field hockey in the Fall, ran indoor track during the Winter, and track in the Spring. My track coach told me he wanted me to take track serious, because he saw potential. So I asked my mom if I could run summer track as well to stay in shape. So that summer I ran track from Ambler Olympic Club. The head coach was also the head coach for Cheltenham High School who would go on to be the back to back State Champions in track and field my whole high school career. It was a pleasure to be coached by Coach "Doc" Beale. Without him I probably would not have become the athlete that I was. Because of him I went from being a 100-200m sprinter to a 200-400m sprinter and would go on to receive a Track and Field Scholarship to Cheyney University of PA as a 200-400m sprinter.

After graduating high school in 2017, I went on to Cheyney University to further my education and run track. I loved Cheyney because it was not far from home and it was a small school that felt like a family. Unfortunately, the school was in a lot of debt which caused them to get rid of their sports programs which included Track and Field. They told us this news with about 2 weeks left in the Spring semester. When I came home from Cheyney, I decided that I would enroll in my community college and work part time. Without track, I did not have the motivation to go to school anymore so I dropped out and decided to work full time.

I found a job working at a preschool called The Children's Learning Center. I always loved working with kids and my dream was always to become a teacher. After a few years of working at TCLC I moved up to becoming the Pre-Kindergarten teacher and ended up getting my Child Development Associate credential (CDA). I figured that since I was already received 9 college credits through my CDA, I should just keep going to school. So here I am, about to graduate in August with my Associate's Degree in Early Childhood Education and still working full time at TCLC.
