When processed, the fibers are mixed and the scale edges may point in opposite directions. When you felt the edges the scales come in touch with each other, “locking” the fiber into position. And it’s not just one or two fibers that are locking together, but literally hundreds of fibers that come in touch with each other and lock into position. This causes the wool to felt.
