All you need is a pencil, drawing paper, an object of your choice and good observational skills!.

Choose any object you like, such as, your favourite soft toy, a fruit, a shoe, the choice is endless. (Just do not pick complicated objects especially if this is your first time trying this activity)

Set your object on the table in front of you, and start observing it, look at it VERY carefully.  See it in terms of lines and shapes and observe how these lines and shapes come together to form your object.  Take your time to look at and study the object in front of you.

Always start off with the biggest shapes that form your object…

In today’s example I am drawing my dog’s favourite toy which is this cute little flamingo.

If you look at my object, you will see that it is mainly an oval shape, so that is what I am drawing first!

While observing this flamingo I notice that the neck and head are pretty much of a “2” that attaches to the oval … Do you agree??? The wings are heart shaped, while the legs are pretty easy as they look just like lines with a little circle attached to the end.

So after drawing a rough sketch of my flamingo using just lines and shapes, I start adding detail, adding the beak, the eye, keeping the lines I like and erasing the rest… hence making it look more like the real thing in front of me!

I am using watercolours and adding some detail in pencil colours to create some more texture.
