The role of plants in society and the environment- I chose a picture of a key because i believe that plants are key to understanding life. They are said to be the first living organisms on planet earth and if we were to fully 'unlock' their secrets, like how mitochondria really convert sunlight into energy, we could find out very simple solutions to living cleaner, healthier, more in touch with nature lives. Plants are the base of the food chain in the environment and help to moderate and keep the earth at equilibrium. They convert Co2 into oxygen, shade the earth maintaining natural temperatures, and detoxify/purify water. Specifically in our society, they are food and depending on how you grow and cook them, can be the best source of nutrition. They are also a type of fuel, with E-85 fuel becoming more and more popular. And lastly, they are clothing and textiles. Plants are also the key to living a healthier life because they are the most natural medicine you can get.

I choose this certain video pertaining to photosynthesis because John Greene is the master of explaining concepts in an entertaining and easy to understand way. Most videos i looked for were on a very elementary or middle school level and your power points go in a little more depth than that. John Greene similarly, explains the process and chemistry behind photosynthesis and defines every part of function of the plant that help make glucose to start the food chain!

It was difficult finding a species that only exists in Georgia. I had no idea how much time, effort, and research goes behind the scenes of documenting plants. I chose relict trillium or Trillium reliquum because it is endangered and only located in Georgia now. The site i got it from has very detailed description if not what i'd consider a full research paper on each specific plant. I left the link below.

Due to deforestation, the rain forest biome is in the most danger. Not only does it cause loss of habitat to thousands of species, it drives climate change. Farmers in areas like Brazil, are clearing a few acres or so acres at a time then burning them in the process called slash and burn. Loggers ad logging operations clear cut countless amounts of forest each year to provide the world with paper and wood products. After the land is cleared, the soil is not protected and dries out, making these effects next to irreversible.
Photo:http://www.aljazeera.com/mritems/imagecache/mbdxxlarge/mritems/Images/2012/12/7/2012127152152872621_20.jpg

Focusing on the point made in the second bullet, neolithic times had to work much harder and longer for food that wasn't guaranteed. They still had lots of trial and error and had to face the consequences of them on their own. This change from hunter gather to farmer led to decreased life span and average world heights to drop. The life span of a male went from 33.1 years for men and 29.2 for women. The average height also dropped from 5'10 for men in the Paleolithic times to 5'4 and women from 5'6 to 5'1. This is directly caused by lack of nutrients in the neolithic diet.
Source:https://sites.google.com/a/email.cpcc.edu/consequences-of-the-neolithic-revolution/consequences-of-advances-in-agriculture and for photo;http://slideplayer.com/slide/9348504/

In 1960, the government of the Republic of the Philippines with the Ford and Rockefeller foundations established the international Rice Research Institute, six years later the miracle rice "IR8" was invented. IR8 required more fertilizers and pesticides, but took the annual rice production in the Philippines from 3.7 to 7.7 million tons in two decades. The Philippines became a major rice exporter. Not far behind them was India, who soon adopted IR8 and saved many millions of lives and transformed the lives of millions of people. With many countries at the time on the verge or in a food crisis, the invention of IR8 that doubled rice yields in one step saved millions of lives. Famine was averted and world populations could continue to grow.
Links: http://www.bbc.com/news/world-asia-india-38156350

I have been going back and forth between answers to this question and right now im going to stick to the first one that popped in my head. Cannabis sativa is an annual herbaceous flowering plant indigenous to eastern Asia but is now widely distributed around the world due to cultivation. It is used as a source of industrial fibre, seed oil, food, recreation, religious/spiritual food, and medicine. I believe that this is a 'super drug' and can be used to treat a plethora of symptoms medically. Our brains require us to consume cannabinoids to help regulate our endocannabinoid system in the pineal gland in the brain. This gland is responsible for mood, appetite, inflammation, fertility, pain sensations, memory and more that research is discovering currently. I believe that more people should consume this naturally occurring drug in replacement to the harmful drugs people are prescribed nowadays that have a list of side effects too long to count. I believe its influence is growing and will continue to in the future as more people discover the evils of the pharmaceutical and food industries and become more in touch with whats good for themselves.

With where we are heading now, I don't see the future looking too good. The population on earth will continue to increase as third world countries try to catch up and industrialize. The weirdest part to me is that 2050 seems to be the turning year. That is when they think we'll cap on capacity (10 bil). When oil is suppose to run out. When nearly all animals/insects/biodiversity (at the rate of extinction now) will be extinct. I know that we keep rapidly trying to inform the public of what is to come but until political reform happens, I dont see much changing. The president and EPA need to actually believe in global warming and cut their financial umbilical cords with these industries that fund their vacations. These corporations are what are keeping these unsustainable ways of life in place and the American people don't know or care.
http://content.time.com/time/arts/article/0,8599,1890927,00.html
