However, this news has been proven fake by the Bayambang mayor who debunked the rumors in a public statement. The mayor cited data from the Rural Health Unit and Bayambang Municipal Police Station which showed no record of suicide cases linked to high onion prices. Mayor Nina also stated that the aforementioned news is in reference to a suicide case of an onion farmer due to huge losses from an armyworm infestation on January 2021. Moreover, DILG has been closely monitoring the issue, the government has also reiterated that no harassment has been found in recent investigations. In totality, the widespread news of 5 suicide cases due to the spike in onion prices is fake and is a testament that we must thoroughly investigate everything we act and believe especially online.
