With this however, he had gained enemies, like John Putnam and their family which we think can be seen as a motive for his actions.He takes a strong role in the court and makes sure all is fair, and we think that his history has played a part is his sense of justice. The final motivation is his wife, Rebecca Nurse being accused of Witchcraft, making his desire for fair treatment even stronger in the court. He is a man of honor none the less and wants what is right, as we see when the town people call on him to break up ordeals, but having his wife be wrongly accused added to this desire to punish those who have sinned, and safe those wrongly accused.
