An outline of the context and life circumstances of the reformer, especially social factors that motivated his/her commitment to respond & reform.

Frederic Ozanam was born in Milan, Italy, on April 23, 1813. He was very disobedient due to the terrible events that occurred around the age of 6 in his life. He was sent to the Royal College of Lyons when he was seven to continue his education and resolve his disobedience. In all areas, especially in literature and languages, he excelled here. He was then educated through the University of Paris. After the French Revolution in 1788-1799, the collapse of the old Bourbon monarchy in the 1830s, and in 1832, when cholera began killing up to 1,200 people a day across Paris, on April 23, 1833, Frederic began the Society of St Vincent De Paul. After having to walk through the streets every day, he started to see people who had become poor and had to live off the minimum bear. The charity began operations in France and Italy where more than 9,00 members were present. It then reached Rome in 1842, England in 1844, Belgium, Scotland and Ireland in 1845, the United States in 1846, and finally Australia on March 5, 1854. In 1856, they came to realise that women needed to be in the same role as men to be able to benefit everyone who needed help all over the world. In 1967, after a trial, women finally began working with men. This has been 113 years since it was first raised.

The Parable of the Good Samaritan

25 On one occasion an expert in the law stood up to test Jesus. “Teacher,” he asked, “what must I do to inherit eternal life?”

26 “What is written in the Law?” he replied. “How do you read it?”

27 He answered, “‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength and with all your mind’; and, ‘Love your neighbour as yourself.’”

28 “You have answered correctly,” Jesus replied. “Do this and you will live.”

29 But he wanted to justify himself, so he asked Jesus, “And who is my neighbour?”

30 In reply Jesus said: “A man was going down from Jerusalem to Jericho, when he was attacked by robbers. They stripped him of his clothes, beat him and went away, leaving him half dead. 31 A priest happened to be going down the same road, and when he saw the man, he passed by on the other side. 32 So too, a Levite, when he came to the place and saw him, passed by on the other side.33 But a Samaritan, as he travelled, came where the man was; and when he saw him, he took pity on him. 34 He went to him and bandaged his wounds, pouring on oil and wine. Then he put the man on his own donkey, brought him to an inn and took care of him. 35 The next day he took out two denarii[c] and gave them to the innkeeper. ‘Look after him,’ he said, ‘and when I return, I will reimburse you for any extra expense you may have.’

36 “Which of these three do you think was a neighbour to the man who fell into the hands of robbers?”
37 The expert in the law replied, “The one who had mercy on him.”

Jesus told him, “Go and do likewise.”

In my opinion The Parable of the Good Samaritan best reflects Frederic Ozanam. Ozanam was like the Good Samaritan by way of helping and looking out for the less fortunate. This parable is found in the Gospel of Luke and spoken by Jesus. It is believed to be written into the bible between 80 AD and 90 AD. This parable is very demonstrative due to the behaviour the Good Samaritan did when there was no other. The Samaritan, for instance, first stopped to help the man unlike the Priest and the Levite. The Good Samaritan, without think stopped to help the unknown beaten man. Ozanam is just like the Good Samaritan as he has now helped millions of people across the world without any prior knowledge of personally knowing them. Frederic Ozanam has vastly impacted people that were less fortunate than himself. He has also influence and inspired people both in his time and throughout the 21st century to follow his actions.

Frederic Ozanam departed on multiple pilgrimages to prayer in cathedrals and express his spiritual beliefs. He committed to readings and meditation from the bible. In morning he read the bible in Greek and meditated for 30 minutes. Every night before he went to bed and every morning after he woke up, he would do the sign of the cross to ask God to watch over him. These practices inspired Frederic to start his mission: the St Vincent De Paul Society.

One of Frederic Ozanam’s writing were “I am now completely convinced that when one does a deed of charity one need not worry about where the money will come from: it will always come.”. Frederic wrote this to help people understand that what you give, you received. He gathered large inspiration from Jesus’ saying ‘love thy neighbour as thyself’.

Another of Frederic writing was “Peace of heart – without it, no good can make us happy. With it, every trial, even the approach of death, can be borne.” This writing spread the message that without self-peace you can’t provide others with help nor find good in others.

Rerum Novarum changed the way people could live their lives around the world. The Rerum Novarum was an encyclical published by Pope Leo XIII in 1891 outlined the Catholic stance on working class conflict and rights.
This encyclical inspired Frederic Ozanam to stand up for the less fortunate work writes and to provide help to them in any way he could. He aspired to be able to have a role in helping give people the necessities of life.

Frederic Ozanam was the founder of the St Vincent De Paul society in 1833 to help the impoverished people living in the slums of Paris, France. He used this to bring people together who had the same mission as him to help the less fortunate. One of the fundamental parts of the St Vincent De Paul society was sacrifice. Ozanam it was important to make self-sacrifice’s in a representation of love and appreciation to others. As part of the St Vincent De Paul society they worshiped Jesus by living life like him and following his footsteps.

Frederic Ozanam vision was to affirm the dignity of everyone and ensure that those less fortunate and in need were cared for, living conditions improved and address the cause of poverty. Through the platform of the St Vincent De Paul Society he was able to speak out about this injustice and paved the way for many other people who had similar visions to him.
