Carol Ann Duffy was born December 23, 1955 in the poorer region, Glasglow, of Scotland. More specifically, Gorbals, in Glasglow. She lived in Glasglow until the age of 6, and then her and her family moved to Stafford, England. Her family were Roman Catholics, her father had a job as a fitter for an electric company, so she was mostly home with her mother Mary Black. She was the first child of 5 who were all boys, except for her. Duffy grew up attending convent schools and at the age of just 14 she began to publish her poetry in magazines. After graduating from Liverpool University, Duffy started to work on her poems while traveling the world as well as teaching her poetry everywhere she goes. She was also a poet critic for The Guardian from 1988 to 1989 and as an editor for the poetry magazine Ambit. She then lectured about poetry at Manchester Metropolitan University, where she also became the creative director for Writing School. ("Carol Ann Duffy" [Britannica])

Her awards include a five-year grant from the National Endowment for Science, Technology and the Arts in England, a Lannan Literary Award, and the T.S. Eliot Poetry Prize. She also became a Fellow of the Royal Society of Literature in England in 1999. Her papers were acquired by the Robert W. Woodruff Library of Emory University. (Academy of American Poets) Also in 1999, Duffy had been considered for the position of poet laureate but the Prime Minister at the time, Tony Blair, was worried that her being a homosexual wouldn't look good so someone else was chosen.
