         <description><![CDATA[<div><strong>2- Blow to Colombian peace deal as former Farc rebel chief arrested on drug charges</strong></div><div>A former Colombian rebel commander has been arrested on US drug-trafficking charges, in a shocking development that heaped more pressure on the stumbling peace process with the demobilized <a href="https://www.theguardian.com/world/farc">Farc</a> guerrillas. </div><div>Seuxis Hernández – a blind former peace negotiator better known by his alias Jesus Santrich – was detained early on Monday and awaits probable extradition to the United States, where prosecutors in New York accused him of conspiring to ship 10,000kg of cocaine.<br><br></div><div> The timing is awkward for defenders of the peace process, coming a day after the official in charge of finances for implementing the accords was sacked after admitting to granting a contract to her partner. Prosecutors are currently investigating wider mishandling of funds, with 10 intermediaries suspected of embezzling money allocated for the peace process. <br><br></div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div><strong>3- Following the Farc peace deal, activists face special risk in areas where the group’s exit has left a power vacuum, officials say<br><br></strong> More than 100 human rights defenders have been killed in <a href="https://www.theguardian.com/world/colombia">Colombia</a> this year, according to the United Nations, which urged more accountability and better protections. <br>The UN refugee agency (UNHCR) has also sounded an alarm about the dangers faced by Colombia’s rights defenders.</div><div>Last month, the UNHCR said it was “more and more worried” about the rise in killings and threats against rights activists along Colombia’s Pacific coast.</div><div>Most victims belonged to Afro-Colombian and indigenous groups, it said.</div><div>Earlier this week, the defense minister, Luis Carlos Villegas, said authorities are working to bring those responsible to justice.</div><div>Across the <a href="https://www.theguardian.com/world/americas">Americas</a>, rights activists are being increasingly targeted, the UN has said.</div><div>Last year, three out of four recorded murders of human rights defenders worldwide took place in the Americas, it said.</div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div><strong>2- Colombia motorbike ban: Bogotá mayor forbids pillion riders in bid to curb crime.<br></strong><br>Thousands of protesting motorcyclists have blocked streets in Bogotá after the Colombian capital banned men from riding as pillion passengers in an attempt to tackle rising street crime.</div><div>Bike riders swarmed through rush hour traffic on Friday in protest against the ban and clashed with police who fired teargas.<br>Bogotá’s ban also applies only to men, leading some to worry that vulnerable women will now be drawn into street crime.</div><div>The city’s motorcyclists claim they are unfairly stigmatised. Many work as couriers and delivery, where narrow potholed streets and labyrinthine one-way systems often cause heavy traffic.</div><div>“Just because we have a bike doesn’t mean we are thieves,” one rider told the EFE news agency. “We work on our bikes and they are our livelihood.”</div><div>Despite the disruption, many Bogotanos sympathised with the protesters, blaming the rise in street muggings on poor policing. “Maybe if the police did their jobs we wouldn’t need stupid rules like this,” said Diego, an Uber driver.</div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div><br><strong>1- </strong>&nbsp;<strong>Colombia suspends peace talks with ELN rebels after bomb attacks <br><br></strong>Talks to end a five decade war called off after group launched bomb attacks on three police stations nationwide on Saturday and Sunday<br>&nbsp;Colombia’s president, Juan Manuel Santos, has suspended peace talks with Marxist ELN rebels after a series of bomb attacks over the weekend killed seven police officers and injured dozens.&nbsp;<br>&nbsp;The government and the National Liberation Army (ELN) have been in talks since February 2017 to end a five-decade war but Santos said he will not accept the group’s continued violence after it launched bomb attacks on three police stations nationwide on Saturday and Sunday.&nbsp;<br>The ELN and the government have been in formal peace talks for nearly a year, and the two sides agreed to their first-ever ceasefire in October. But the rebels launched a new offensive when the ceasefire expired earlier this month, killing security force members, bombing major oil pipelines and kidnapping an oil contractor.</div><div>Another larger rebel group, the Farc, demobilized under a 2016 peace deal with the government. It is now known as the Revolutionary Alternative Common Force political party.&nbsp;</div>]]></description>

Recently, however, the group of ‘professional guides’ who’ve either done the course or were grandfathered in – but who often do not speak English or have the knowledge needed to do specialised tours – have been pressuring the police to stop non-certified guides from working. <br> The solution here is for the government to cease enforcing a law that’s absurd, unnecessary and destructive, and let people do the work they’re good at. </div>]]></description>
