IXL is an online educational platform that contains content and tools to help teachers, primarily K-12 teachers, teach any lesson, personalize instruction, and accelerate learning. Currently, IXL covers all 4 4 core subjects, as well as content for Spanish 1 and Spanish Language Arts. Across these subjects, IXL offers 17,000+ skills that are adaptive in nature and provide students with immediate feedback, math lessons, video tutorials, and educational games.

From the teacher view, teachers are able to assign skills directly to students, create custom quizzes with questions from IXL skills (or they can create their own questions, if desired), and utilize many engagement tools such as Group Jams, Live Classroom (to monitor student practice in real-time), and Leaderboards (to create friendly competitions among students while working on the platform).

A large part of IXL's product is its Diagnostic Assessment. The IXL Flex Diagnostic is an adaptive assessment tool that provides an accurate, up-to-the-minute portrait of each and every student. By answering questions in the Flex Diagnostic, students can pinpoint their current levels of knowledge in math and language arts (overall and in specific strands), plus their reading level.

At the beginning of each diagnostic session, and periodically thereafter, students will get a choice between one of two questions to answer.

Once a student completes their Flex Diagnostic for a particular subject, they will receive a singular score that represents their working grade level. For example, a level of 400 represents a readiness to start working on 4th-grade skills, and a level of 450 means the student is about halfway through the 4th-grade curriculum.

Based on each student’s diagnostic results, the Flex Diagnostic also provides targeted recommendations that will help them grow.

Learning Theory 1: Behaviorism

Behaviorism is a theory that can be seen in IXL's Flex Diagnostic in a few ways, the first being the immediate feedback seen by a student as they answer diagnostic questions. This instant response reinforces the behavior of trying again and learning the correct way to answer a question.

The repetitive nature of the Diagnostic also exhibits behaviorist principles, as the Diagnostic continually asks students more questions to refine its understanding of their skill level.

The Flex Diagnostic also demonstrates some cognitivist principles, as it adjusts difficulty based on responses to gauge a student’s current level of understanding. This is a cognitivist approach because it meets the learner where they are (rather than providing all learners with the same information at the same speed, like behaviorist models typically do).

After completing the Diagnostic and analyzing their Diagnostic Action Plan (their scores and personalized skill recommendations), metacognition is encouraged, as students are thinking about their own thinking and learning pathways.
