They look after all the local things we have in our environment - 
1. They make sure that the schools and hospitals are running in the right manner. 
2. They look after the bus stands. 
3. They provide us clean water ( water supply). 
4. To make our environment healthier and cleaner, they assign people to collect garbage. 
5. Maintenance. Look after roads, lights and provide us electricity.

Gurgaon is a district in Haryana. There are almost 9 lack people living in Gurgaon only. One officer can't collect taxes from so many people. To make it easier, they divide the district in tehsil. 
Now, what's the role of the ‘Tehsildar’?  
 Tehsildar is basically a tax officer and some revenue inspectors accompany him.
Why do they accompany him? 
Do you know that taxes are collected in 3 ways.
1. Individual income taxes - Money we earn on our own. (Land etc. )  
2. Payroll taxes
3. Corporate income taxes
