At the start of the day I created my Padlet account to keep track of my daily targets. During the next lesson we went over the assignment brief and some of the tasks required for our assignment, we also looked at Codes and Conventions within western themed films. We then learnt different camera angles and why we would use each one. We also learned about the Rule Of Thirds and the 180 Degree rule and why they are important when creating a product. Lastly, we were taught how to use the cameras and how to use the equipment in general. After, we adjusted the white balance and exposure, and were also taught how to manually focus the camera. We were then given the chance to go around the campus and use the cameras to test out a variety of shot types such as the Dutch tilt, close up, extreme close up, mid shot, worms eye view and more. In todays lessons I feel liked I have learned something new and know a wider range of camera angles and how to apply them. Next time I feel that I should stick to the shot list more so that we are able to complete the task within the time given.

In todays lesson we had a look at other peoples work from yesterday involving different types of shots and discussed what was good about each shot. We were then given a script from a horror film called "The Room" and had to designate a role for each member of the group; these roles included two actors, a camera person and a director. Afterwards we had to create a basic storyboard for each scene whilst considering the different shot types that we could include. I feel that in our scenes we included a wide range of shots which adds variety to our scenes. The only issue that we had was finding a location to film which means that we were pushed for time, however we managed to find a location eventually and completed all of our filming, this could be avoided next time by planning our scenes better. Overall I am happy with the amount of shots that we included and I feel that it won't be too difficult to edit.

At the beginning of the lesson we discussed different adverts and the different features that they may include. We were then given the task to find some adverts on our own and analyse them, in my analysis I had to comment on the different types of shots that were used and the composition, so what was happening within the frame. During the afternoon session we focused on Risk Assessments and why they are important, Dave had created a scenario with equipment that was set up with many hazards and it was our job as a production team to identify them, once we had done that we had to complete a worksheet which made us list the risk, come up with a solution and then list contacts in case of an emergency. Afterwards were completed a job role analysis where we researched the qualifications and attributes that are needed to be a camera operator, we also had to find out what experience is needed for the job. I feel that I know more about the role of a camera operator and what skills i would need to do this job. I also know more about why we need to do Risk Assessments in the industry and why they are important.

During our tutorial we had to elect two members of the class to be the class reps, however I didn't put myself forward for the role as I didn't think it would suit me. After break we then discussed different semiotics within different signs that we see every day, within each sign we had to identify the signifier, meaning what we could see and the signified, so what meanings the sign would convey or how people would interpret it. We also talked about the denotations and connotations in each sign, denotations refer to what we can see in the picture and connotations refer to what everything in the picture could mean. Next we learned about different types of lighting that are used in most products, we were also given the change to familiarise ourselves with the types of equipment that we are able to use, such as small and large LED's, spot light, dedo light, and the soft box. We were then shown how to set the equipment up and then took pictures of a fake head using the three main types of lighting: key, fill and back lighting. Overall I enjoyed todays session as I now know how to use different types of lighting equipment and have learnt something new. Next time I will consider which types of lighting are necessary depending on the location and the mood I am trying to create.

Print Advert Analysis - 29/9/16

1. Heinz Tomato Sauce advert.
For this advert there is a picture of a bottle of tomato sauce made up from slices of tomato. The meaning of this advert is that Heinz make their ketchup from natural ingredients and that they use and grow their own tomatoes.
The producer is trying to persuade the audience to buy Heinz ketchup by reassuring them that their ingredients are natural, which will make the audience feel more comfortable whilst consuming the product. The producer has also included a slogan: "No one grows Ketchup like Heinz", the slogan is fairly simple so that the audience are more likely to remember it.
I feel like this advert would convince me to buy the product as Heinz is a popular product. I think that this advert would be fairly successful as people are familiar with the product, it would also appeal to people who are conscious about their diet and want to stick to healthy eating guidelines.

2. Spec Savers glasses
In this advert there is a photo of a pair of glasses with some text above which says "Goal-Line technology from £25". This means that the advert is mostly trying to appeal to football fans, which generally are mostly men. By talking about Goal-Line technology it is suggesting that their glasses are very precise and accurate which will persuade the audience to buy them.
The Producer is trying to suggest that glasses from Spec Savers are the most clear compared to other glasses, the price of the glasses are also highlighted in a different colour to the rest of the text to make the audience more aware of the price.
In my opinion the advert would be quite successful as the glasses are set at a reasonable price, the advert is also very simple yet effective as there isn't too much going on. In order to improve the advert I think that the producer could have chosen something else rather than goal-line technology as it would appeal to a wider range of people rather than mostly men.

3. iPod Touch Advert
The first thing that caught my attention in this advert is the four silhouettes of each member of The Beetles walking along whilst listening to music using an iPod. By using a recognisable band Apple are trying to convince its target audience that even big names such as the Beetles would use their product, which would make other people want to use it too. The iPod and earphones are coloured in white whilst The Beetles are in black, this is so that the product is highlighted and that the audience know what is being advertised.
The producer is trying to persuade people to buy their product by suggesting that their product is already quite popular, particularly with big artists.
Personally I like the advert as it is very simple and I use Apple products quite often. I think that the advert would have been fairly successful as The Beetles are recognisable to people of most ages and Apple is quite a big company.

4. Sega Genesis Advert
The first thing that we can see when looking at this advert is the text above the images that says "Genesis does what Nintendon't", this slogan is effective as it has played on Nintendo's company name, we can tell straight away that the article is trying to convince people to buy the Sega Genesis rather than a Nintendo console.
The producer has also included many images of the variety of games that are available on the Sega Genesis, by doing this the producer is making the advert more interesting which will keep the audience interested. I think that this article is very persuasive to people who are into game consoles which will make it fairly successful. The advert shows the different genres that can be played on the Sega genesis

5. Heroin Poster
Most of the picture is covered by a hand which looks quite dead as the fingertips are damaged quite badly, there is also some text at the bottom of the page which talks about how heroin makes the skin itch to the point where the person scratches through it. The purpose of the advert is to stop people from abusing drugs by showing the effects of heroin in particular. When I see this advert it makes me think about making the right choices and completely puts me off of using any type of dangerous drug, which we could say is the purpose of the advert. Overall I would say that this advert is fairly successful as its purpose is to put people off of using drugs and for me it has done that.

6. Anti-smoking Advert
For this advertisement we can see a picture of a set of teeth, however each tooth is a cigarette which has been smoked. The meaning of this advert is to show the effects of smoking, particularly how it effects your teeth. By replacing each tooth with a cigarette it makes the audience consider whether they would want the same thing to happen to their teeth and whether they would smoke or not. I would say that the advert would be fairly successful as it causes the audience to realise how bad smoking can be for people.

During out morning session we went through the powerpoint which had a list of adverts and spoke about some of the examples as a class. Afterwards we then talked about the Hypodermic Needle theory, which is a theory that focuses on how the piece of media effects the consumer, which could be by injecting information directly to the consumer which will shape their opinion or behaviour, the Hypodermic Needle theory also relates to a passive audience theory, which means that the consumer doesn't choose to use a product, we also looked at the Uses and Gratification theory, which focuses on an active audience theory and how people choose to consume a product for a specific purpose. There is also the two step theory, which focuses on how people share their opinions with others about a particular product. We then spent the rest of the day analysing different print adverts and discussing the purpose, meaning and how we feel about the advert. Overall I feel like I now know more in terms of what would make a good advert and why an advert should have these different things.

Todays lesson was mostly a follow up of the advertising analysis work that we did yesterday, however today we were given the opportunity to brainstorm ideas for a social action advert that we are going to create in our production teams. Our group chose to base our advert on smoking and the effects, whilst aiming at a target audience of mostly young teens. By coming up with ideas now it will make the process easier in the future so that we can focus on the actual production itself. Afterwards we had to analyse a minimum of three film based adverts and refer to the camera shots that were used and the content and purpose of each advert. During the afternoon we were given the opportunity to take some photos whilst including different types of lighting within our production team, we used the D90 camera and were shown how to adjust the focus, shut speed which should be at 125 and F stop which should be at around 22-25. Overall I feel like I have gained more knowledge about the purpose of each type of lighting, I also now know how to work with the D90 camera for when I am required to take photos in the future.

At the start of the lesson we looked at adverts that were based around contextual awareness, which were different adverts for the same products shown in different countries, we discussed why they would be different and why certain adverts would have to be changed if they wanted it to be shown in a certain country, this is because certain cultures have different views about what is socially acceptable. An example of this is an underwear advert that we looked at, the USA one had lots of skin showing with certain parts covered up whilst the Saudi Arabian one just had the underwear with the arms and legs of the woman scribbled out. We then had to get into pairs and choose two adverts from different countries that advertised the same product and create a detailed case study of each one. For our case study we had to discuss the nature and purpose, target audience, visual, written, semiotic communication and the message of the advert. Overall I feel like I now know what to consider when creating a product such as an advert and how to tailor it to the target audience that I will aim the product at.

Today we covered what types of research methods are used during the pre-production stage and why they are used, for example primary research is research that is obtained first hand and secondary research is research that has been carried out by another person. We also looked at qualitative research, which are facts and opinions of the target audience and quantitative research can be statistics or numerical data. We then spent the remainder of the lesson designing a questionnaire to ask people about different film based adverts, some of the questions asked if the product was effective and if it was appropriate for the target audience. Overall I feel like my research skills have improved and I know how to get the appropriate information when making a product such as an advert.

At the beginning of the lesson we continued our work about the different consumption theories and identified some strengths and weaknesses about each theory. For the rest of the lesson we were taught how to use photoshop, at first i wasn't very comfortable while using it as I haven't had much experience, however as the day progressed I felt more confident by having the chance to play around with the software. Dave showed us some of the features that photoshop have which included Gaussian blur, Hue and Saturation, and how to adjust the brightness and contrast. Overall I feel more confident when using photoshop now and I feel like I produced a good amount of work, considering I hadn't had much experience with photoshop. Overall I have enjoyed this lesson very much and I think it will benefit me when the time comes to make my own product as I now have the right skills. In the afternoon we were taught some of the features that are included in the editing software "Premiere Pro", we did a short quiz on Kahoot to gain more knowledge and then took notes so that we will remember when it comes to editing, we then had to transport the footage that we filmed a few weeks ago onto the macs to edit the footage. Overall I feel that I know some of the basics when using premiere pro and will be able to use these skills when editing a product in the future.

We then had to put this information into a report which also required us to describe the role of a media researcher and why it is a very important role when producing a product. We also had to state what the purpose of research is and why doing enough research is vital to developing a produce, I also looked up different companies that complete research and find data in TV ratings and how popular certain radio stations are during a particular time period.

At the start of the lesson we had to go through a checklist which had all of the work that we need to submit before the end of term, most of the work on the checklist are tasks that I have already done, so I feel like I am fairly organised. We then went into the town centre to complete some vox pops, which is when you go and interview members of the public for a short time whilst asking them a couple of questions about a topic, we had to print off two print adverts and ask members of the public questions such as how the advert made them feel, and why they think the advert does/doesn't work. When we went off into the town we didn't manage to get anyone to interview, as most people just weren't inclined to do it, however when we decided to try and find people on campus we managed to find plenty of people who were willing to do it. We then spent the rest of the afternoon creating a survey using survey monkey asking about the adverts that we printed off for the vox pops, we had to come up with 10 questions and leave a link to the questionnaire so that members of the public will complete it. Overall I think that the vox pops were fairly successful in the end as we managed to get a good amount of people to do it.

Throughout todays lesson we spent it planning ideas to make a film based advert on our own, we had to complete a mind map or something to present our ideas onto. In tomorrows lesson we will have to pitch our ideas to the rest of the class and vote for who's ideas were the best, we will also have to answer questions from other people when presenting our ideas, which means that we will have to cover as much as possible in our presentation. For my advert I chose to focus on drug abuse and how using certain drugs can cause you to progress onto more serious drugs, the advert will be set in a POV as I feel like it will engage with the audience more. Overall I am not really looking forward to pitching to the class as I don't feel very confident when talking to a large group of people, however I think that the experience will give me the confidence that I need when I have to do it in future. I have attached the min map which I have completed to show some of the topics I will be talking about in my presentation.

In todays lesson we had to pitch our ideas for the film based advert that we have to create as part of our assignment. I feel like my pitch wasn't too bad but could've been better as I wasn't very organised when it came to the actual pitch as I was unable to print off my mind map and other notes. Whilst we were watching other peoples pitches we had to give them scores out of five based on how good their ideas were and how well they conducted the pitch in general. I feel like most of the pitchers were done quite well as we could get a good idea of the composition in each advert. Tomorrow we will be discussing what roles within the team that we would like to choose and why we think we would suit that role. Overall I feel like my pitching skills have improved, however I will be more successful when I am more organised.

At the start of the lesson we spent most of the time looking for more potential work experience, I have managed to find a local video production company which I have contacted so I am waiting for a response. We were then given the opportunity to put together a brief pitch for what job role we would like to have when our production teams are put together, I chose to go for the role of Camera Operator as I feel like I have a good knowledge of the different shot types and I am able to work well as part of a team, for my second option I chose Sound Operator as I would like to learn more about the role. After we had to put our preferred roles in order of what we'd like to do most to least, we also had to choose which productions that we'd like to work on the most and who we'd like to work with based on their pitch. Overall I feel like the pitch went quite well as I managed to get my ideas across and say why I feel like I would be good for the role.

Below I have attached The powerpoint slide that I used to prepare myself for the pitch.

In the morning we had to go down to the izone to finally get our iPads, this is so that we are able to interact more and complete work out of college ours easier. We them spent the rest of the day learning about the role of a sound operator and how to use the different types of equipment. The first piece of equipment that we discussed was the tascam, in order to use this you will need am XLR cable, a shotgun microphone and two AA batteries. We also learned how to use the boom pole, to use the boom pole your legs need to be shoulder width apart with your arms above your head. The shotgun mic meeds to be pointed down towards the actors at a 45 degree angle. We were then given the chance to use some of the equipment to record a scene from a script. Overall I feel like ours turned out quite well as we finished quickly and got most of it correct in terms of using the equipment. In order to improve I think we should consider our location more carefully.

Today was the first chance that we got to get into our production teams to start the pre production stage, there is a lot of paper work to do, such as production schedule, meeting sheets so that we can keep an accurate record of what we discussed in the meeting, we also completed some risk assessments for the locations that we are going to be filming at, this is so we are aware of any potential hazards and are able to prevent them. We also completed location recces so that we know where we will be filming. Overall I feel that we are quite organised as we have got quite a lot of paperwork done. As a camera operator I have begun to consider which shot type would be best for each scene. In tomorrow's lesson we have booked out the room J113, which is one of the studios that we are considering using as a location, we have also considered using the motion room as it is quite dark so we will be able to change the lighting quite easily. We have also considered our budget and how much any props could cost, however they will be quite cheap as we will be getting most of our props from pound land because we don't need anything too extravagant, some of these items will include plastic cups, white sheets and glowsticks. As well as having booked out J113 we will also be completing the script and storyboards to do so that we know exactly what we are filming.

In today's lessons we completed more of the production schedule so that we know what we are going to be doing on a particular day. We also sourced some actors from performing arts to be in our advert, we managed to successfully get 5 actors to be in our product which I think is quite good considering a lot of the actors are busy, for our product we managed to get 3 girls and 2 boys, we did the casting this way for ethical reasons so that the product isn't gender biased, this also gives the product a wider target audience . We then went down to J113 to take some practice shots using the camera and sound equipment. As a camera operator I feel like I included a good range of shot types. Throughout the filming process we practiced filming some of the scenes towards the end of the product, where the person who has died and has ended up at a morgue where she will offer the camera an alcoholic beverage. During the process we made several changes to the location as we have now decided to change which side of the room that we would like to used. Overall I feel that today has been quite productive as we now have a good idea as to how we are going to film that scene, I think that we were also very organised as we have managed to book equipment and rooms and when we are going to film with the actors.

At the start of the day we decided that it would be best to redo the shot list, as we thought that some of the original ideas could've been improved upon. As the camera operator I am partially responsible for making sure that we include a variety of different shot types in our product, this meant that I had to work closely with the director to make sure we got the right shots and come to a compromise in terms of ideas. We then gathered the equipment and went down to J113 whilst some other team members went and got the actors that we are including in the advert, despite taking quite a long time I feel like we were fairly organised as we managed to stick to the time schedule, I also feel like I got a good range of shots whilst filming. Sometimes me and the director chose to come away from the shot list meaning that we came up with new ideas during the filming process, I feel like these ideas worked well because they covered the scene from most angles. Overall I feel that today went very well as we managed to get most if not all of the filming done, which means that we are quite far ahead. Tomorrow we will be reviewing some of the footage that we filmed today to see whether or not certain parts can be improved in any way

In todays lesson we spoke again about ways to improve the advert before the screening tomorrow, where it will be shown to other members of our class and other classes, I helped Ben (sound operator) get more sounds for a scene when the people are still partying in their car and are singing whilst drunk, I think it was quite successful as we managed to get all of the sounds that we needed in time for the rest of the team to help edit them into the advert. I also started to work on the final report that we have to do for our assignment, however I can only do certain parts of the evaluation as it requires for me to have received feedback on my advert.

As we are reaching the final stages of the post production stages me and my production team went to ask people to complete questionnaires about our advert, I feel like it was quite successful as we managed to ask a lot of people some open questions after showing them the advert. We also went through a checklist with what we have to include in the final evaluation, such as how we have improved and talk about the feedback that we have been given. Tomorrow I will continue to work on the final evaluation so that I have a good amount of detail when my work is assessed.
