A Solution for The Planet

The problem that we’re facing is the amount of usage of plastic in makeup and skincare products. Becoming sustainable shouldn’t be difficult, so if more brands were to use eco-friendly ingredients it would help. A solution to becoming sustainable for any individual they can simply just use the rest of the product that they already have and next time they go to rebuy it, find a better alterative from a clean brand that doesn’t contain any harmful chemicals nor worsends the planet. Many brands from Sephora and Ulta are clean and not harmful to the environment due to the glass packaging. Some brands that you can switch to are Youth to The People, Glow Recipe, and Alpyn Beauty. To help the planet more in not buying sustainable skinare and makeup products is start composting to help food waste. Or eat more vegetables. France, Kenya, and Jamicia are a few of the many countries that have banned single use plastics. The United States has an act that will prevent hazardous chemicals from causing a public-health disaster. Another propsition to help is to cut down on carbon like the car brand Honda is doing. They’re trying to create a affordable and electric car so everyone can help the planet.

As a result of the beauty industry creating more products by receiving more money each year, the amount of plastic packaging has increased. Since the packaging for the cosmetic products is half of the time complex, it’s difficult to recycle.“The bottles, tubes, and containers used annually by the cosmetic industry add up to 120 billion units of plastic packaging. But how does this hurt our planet? Of the 120 billion units of plastic packaging used each year, 70% ends up in landfills.” - the University of Connecticut. Because of this, our landfills are rapidly increasing and pouring into the ocean slowly. For all the plastic packaging in our landfills, it’ll take 450 years or more for all of it to break down. This leads to discussing the impact of makeup products and chemicals and how they impact the environment. Some Perfumes, hairsprays, and deodorants can be as much effect as a car’s impact on the environment. The chemicals inside beauty products mix with the air to create PM2.5 which is bad for our lungs, it also is what air pollution is. Air pollution kills 7 million each year.

Consequently, since the makeup is made cheaply there are many harmful ingredients and effects on the users. One chemical that’s been found in mineral sunscreen and makeup is Titanium dioxide or zinc oxide. They’re known to damage DNA and if inhaled can cause lung problems. That’s just one out of the many chemicals in makeup. Resorcinol is another chemical that is supposed to help acne and eczema, but instead, if you have broken skin it can damage your thyroid. Every year $49.2 billion dollars is spent on makeup that half ends up damaging you instead of helping. Not to mention the impacts on your mental health. Since beauty influencers use filters and Photoshop, it can create low self-esteem in the viewers that are consuming it.

During the rise of films, it caused the rise of makeup within society.
