The former queen begins her poem by discussing how she had tuned many suitors away in her lifetime un-remorsefully. Author Theodora Jankowski covers this topic in "The Facts On File Companion to British Poetry Before 1600" as she analyzes the lines from the Queen's verses. Jankowski writes, "It does reflect ... on the problems of a queen whose private woman's body might want a relationship with someone she loves, but ... if she marries, she must agree to a political alliance with a man who might want to take royal power from her." From Elizabeth I's background as a woman in power, it's easy to understand why she had turned away so many suitors in her lifetime, despite her want to love and to be loved.

~ Elizabeth and her half sister, Mary, Queen of Scots, had one of the most legendary rivals fought for the British crown and Elizabeth eventually gave her blessing to have Mary beheaded in 1587.
~ She was never meant to be queen but became reinstated after deemed invalid and after the death of her brother and older sister she became queen.
