The TedTalk is entitled “connected, but alone?” by Sherry Turkle. It covers how technology is slowly taking over our lives, evident in workplaces, schools, and even when youths are together. People are often seen busy on their phones, instead of having quality time or conversing with each other. The speaker said that, she herself loves receiving text messages, but too many of them can be a problem, because it may result that people will be slave to their devices. Technology nowadays is continuously upgrading, these little devices are psychologically powerful, for changing not only what people do but also who they are. They lose focus, not paying attention and not making eye contact. The “Goldilocks Effect” was also mentioned, which means “not too close, not too far, just right”, because when people are communicating through technology, they get to edit themselves, their feelings, retouch the feeling and voice, and can even delete. Whereas in face to face communication, they can’t control what to say. That is why technology is so popular, for easily getting someone where he want his attention to be. Including the painful truth, that humans wish for sociable robots who will be there when no one listens to them, they also rely on social media like facebook, who has automatic listeners.

I agree with Turkle (2012) that too much of these technologies can be a problem, for it builds a gap among people, because it isolate the one who uses it and especially now that almost all person can learn how to operate these little devices. People wants to, be communicated with others, but they do not notice that they are getting away with the people around. The speaker is right, that solitude should be taught, not being alone with a device, because that will only teach them to be lonely. Technology has a big help to humans, but it must be used moderately, and wisely.
