This has been a good thought about trying to dig into not only how we can help but also some of the stems of procrastination. There's definitely a fine line between "It's easier said than done" and falling back on that as an excuse to not have to try and mitigate it.

I have worked a lot on making sure the amount of assignments I have is appropriate, but still maintains necessary rigor. I worked a lot leading up to this semester on revising the instructions and what is presented to the kids to help them with that. All of this to say that they are being put in a position to better pace themselves with bite-size chunks, start early, end on time. It is one thing to tell them what they need to do, but I needed to make sure I was putting them in a place to succeed on that advise. Good to know the articles agree with me.

The article on the Science Behind Procrastination was interesting and highlighted the costs of procrastination outweighed the temporary benefits. This is difficult to communicate students that report they work better under the pressure and enjoy their free time gained from the avoidance-but the studies indicated that these students typically earned lower grades, more stress and sickness.

I think there's a lot to the ideas shared in the Psychological Science article regarding regulating mood, feeling guilty about procrastinating. I've seen it in my own children. They want to do the work, but not now because it feels better to focus on something else. Then they feel guilty about not getting it done or doing a poor job.

I found these two quotes hit home for me:

"The first time I thought about tackling this chore, I automatically imagined the mild aggravation involved." from the Edweek.org article,

and

"You’ve got to dig a little deeper and find some personal meaning in that task.” from the Psychological Science article.

One of my boys recently said to me that he really struggled with school all the way from Kdgn through HS because the tasks he was asked to do were always so meaningless. He still struggles to do anything that is not intrinsically valuable to him.
