1. There was enough air pollution in pre-industrial cities for people to notice. It came from burning wood and working in industries.
2. There was a lot of water pollution. It came from sewage, overflow from garbage, and the pollution in the air from industries ultimately affects the water.

3. Humans got the energy they needed to survive from the sun, wind, and wood for timber. The Greeks and Romans tried to prevent many trees from being cut down.

4. Soil conservation was being practiced in China, India, and Peru because they knew the long-term effect of soil erosion and tried to stop it.

5. Lead poisoning was a problem because people would ingest lead as a sweetener for wine or as a condiment. This led to the decline of the Roman Empire.

1. People begin to use science and logic to progress the world. They create the printing press which allows new ideas to be introduced. During Enlightenment, they value reason over faith.

2. The Malthusian perspective states that human population growth expands exponentially, while food production struggles to keep up and only grows in a linear fashion.

3. As technology began to advance, so did consternation about the environment’s state of affairs. An example of this is the English scientist Percival Pott, who declared coal as a leading cause of cancer for chimney sweeps.

4.Sanitation became essential because of the rise of diseases from increased pollution from industrialization.

5. According to William Wordsworth, an enraged English poet, air pollution caused by the Industrial Revolution led to the loss of ‘fresh air,’ which indicates a rise in the belief of poor air quality at this time.

6. Due to the many laws imposed attempting to mitigate water pollution, it is clear that unclean water systems were a crisis that needed to be mended.

7. The public was rightfully outraged that such a magnificent spectacle of nature was mutilated for the benefit of amusement in carnival shows.
